My dealer says fitting my Garmin 550 (BMW Zumo) to my new GSA WC will require the tank to be removed to access the plug in the loom for the device's power cable. Currently it has a cable that plugged into a socket on my R1200R that was easily found under the front of the tank. I'd rather not have my new bike messed with and go for a new compatible GPS if the retro fit isn't straightforward. Any thoughts please?

I've got a 550; I also had a Nav IV and then a Nav V on the GS LC; I sold the Nav IV here and the Nav V will go on the new GSA when I get it on Saturday. The Nav V is hugely better than the 550, so if it was me in your position, I'd sell the 550 here, and then negotiate a decent price for the Nav V from the dealer selling you your new bike. By the time you've got a bit of money back from the 550, plus the saving in labour from not having to have the tank off etc for the 550, your cost to change to the Nav V will be pretty low - and you're getting a much better unit.

Totally agree..

Thanks for the advice. What's a 550 with recent map update and Touratech lockable mount worth?

If your new GSA has the GSP prep package with the control wheel, mount, etc, I would definitely go with jtb's suggestion and upgrade to a Nav V which would then integrate with the bike's functions. Your Zumo will not. If you don't have the prep package couldn't you just plug your Zumo into the accessory outlet up on the dash?

Mine's an XE and has the GPS prep. I realise the 550 wouldn't work with the wheel thingy just want it to power up so, yes, good call, I could just adapt it to plug into a socket but if it's worth enough I would sell it and buy the latest incarnation. What the hell it's only more money!.

As our friends across the pond say; 'I've pulled the trigger' on a new Nav 5. So I'll sell mine to help pay for it. I sold 3 bikes to pay for the new GSA anyway. Thanks for the replies all.

I don't think that you will regret it: the Nav V is a much better device, with a much better screen.

If the GSA is the same as the standard GS you don't need to lift the tank the plug is on the right hand side in front of the tank just follow the loom!

No harm upgrading though if you get a good deal?

The 550 suited me well that's why I was originally going to keep it but I was also sold on the updated benefits of the Nav V. This will be my 4th generation satnav since I started needing reading glasses for maps. I still have maps with me though for forward planning.

Big bonus of the nav V, bigger screen & really high definition for small street names..
I can see it without my glasses..

I sold my 550,
bought a 660 (which is great bit of kit)
Sold the 660 after 6months for the Nav V.. ( which comes with lifetime maps)
Really LIKE the nav V
