Garmin 660 or 340

Hi,
I’m looking for a sat nav to work with my Interphone 4 & iPhone 4S.
The 340 looks to be the latest technology but the 660 seems to have the most features.
Looking on-line I can get the 340 for £230 including lifetime European maps or £285 for the 660 with lifetime European maps.
From the reviews that I have read the 340 may not be as robust as the 660.
Opinions please.
 
I've just ordered the 340LM after advice from our local Sat-Nav (Geek, Nerd, wizard) etc.

I don't think you get the whole of Europe mapping, just "western Europe" That might not matter to you but if you want to explore other parts of Europe it might,

RIDE mags "Best Buy" :thumb2 , 660LM was recomended........


Is this a recent comparison test against the two and do you have a link.
To be honest I only want it for when I get lost or the arse is twitching because fuel is so low I need petrol :blast
 
Thanks for your comments. I have read the article in Ride & have done quite a bit of googling & You Tube watching.
I want to use it on a trip to France later this year, I want to be able to upload routes onto it, but also make updates while on the move & wondered how the units have worked for other people.

I've not used a 340.. but the 660 is a very good unit, and routes can be created 'on the road'.. even the 'old' 550 is a good unit too.

I'd see what they cost and go from there.

I can get a 660 for less than £300 with lifetime map updates.
I’ve now just looked at the Basecamp v Mapsource threads & that’s confused me, as the 660 comes with Mapsource but that’s been replaced by Basecamp!
 
You can use either Basecamp or Mapsource on the 660, I prefer Mapsource, the maps are the same whatever you use though.. the 660 has the 'Lane Assist' that was mentioned earlier.

Just to add.. Basecamp and Mapsource, are the mapping programs you would use to create routes, the GPS units have their own mapping.. (can't remember the name at the mo..)
 
I have the 340lm I have used it in France a few times never failed me,I have planned routes on basecamp and it has been fine,I have now been trying that moto loco mapping transferred a route I planned seemed easier than Basecamp.only problem I had was I missed a waypoint and it tried to take me back to it and I couldn't figure out how to delete it,I did figure out eventually.
I had the new TomTom rider and I sold it for this much better but that's my opinion other folk like Tomtom.

Your new device can be set up to work with Mapsource. Mapsource is in my opinion much easier to plan routes. I find it quicker than Tyre. In either Garmin system you can add via points as well as waypoints. Via points are better along a route as the device will not force you to go through them.

On the routes I produce here for our guests I use both but things are slightly different here. Often there is no alternative route there being only the one road up the mountain. In this case putting a waypoint on the road rarely causes a problem and often can be used to mark a particularly fine view or a coffee stop. Elsewhere it's best only to use waypoints for the start and end plus anywhere you must stop along the way.

I looked at the 660, 590 and 390 and decided on the 390 - very happy with it so far and definite upgrade from the Nav IIs I have been using for last 7 years. Not that 390 does not have MP3 player if that bothers you. As to planning routes there are several options - personally I use Autoroute.

Chose the 390 because it was newer model than the 660; matte screen is supposed to be more visible in sunlight; preferred the look of it; don't need unnecessary features on te 660 - not bothered about listening to any voice or music on the bike; was a good price in Halfords and I had a discount card which made it under £300 with the tyre pressure monitors; final selling point was tyre pressure monitors. I had a tyre blow out six years ago which resulted in badly broken femur and maybe this feature would have saved me from the pain I still feel every day, I don't know but seems like a good idea worth trying :nenau
 
The 390 is £295 at the moment without the pressure sensors. Not got metal valves on my bike so don’t think they’ll work anyway (without getting them changed). Have got a trade card so might get a bit more off. Does your phone connect directly to the 390 then connect your headset to the 390? Cheers
