Has anyone managed to use Base Camp with UK/European maps ? I can't get my 660 to show much detail at all, and minor roads are totally missing.
It will only show the American mapping as being present !
How do I get it to import/use my unlocked Europe maps?
I was hoping to use Base Camp as an alternative for the very sluggish and buggy Road Trip , but unsuccessfull so far :blast

Does anyone actually use Base Camp ?

No, I've only ever seen mention of it on the Garmin Forum. I don't know what it is or what it does.

However, I think the problem with getting an answer to your question is that it really doesn't make a lot of sense. I've got several Garmin GPS units and have used them for several years now, I've also got a BMW Navigator IV which is really just a Zumo 660 in a posh frock so I'm not completely ignorant of Garmin GPS units and software.

It sounds a bit like you may have bought a US spec 660 is that correct? In which case, it would only be preloaded with City Navigator NT North America and if you're now trying to use it here in the UK, it'll only be showing the base map which will have very little detail whatsoever. You don't say if you have a copy of City Navigator NT, Europe which you wish to unlock and load into the 660. If not, you'll need to purchase a copy from Garmin. If you want to retain the USA maps, the easiest way would be to purchase the Europe maps on a Micro SD card.

If I've misunderstood what you want, please feel free to clarify.....:)

Hi Schtum,
no, purchased in UK , and loaded with unlocked European Maps.

This what Base camp is meant to do, which is similar to the pathetic Road Trip software;
  • BaseCamp is a 3D mapping application that allows you to transfer waypoints, tracks, and routes between your Mac and Garmin device and manage your data using topographic Garmin maps that include digital elevation model(DEM) data, such as Topo U.S. 24K, Topo U.S. 24K National Parks (version 3), Topo U.S. 100K (version 4 and later), Topo U.S. 2008, Topo Australia, Topo Canada (version 4), Topo Deutschland, Topo Great Britain, and Topo products produced by many Garmin distributors.
  • Features include:
    1. Transfer waypoints, geocaches, routes, and tracks to and from your GPS device.
Create, view, edit, and organize waypoints, routes, and tracks.
Find places, such as addresses, points of interest, and public land survey areas included in your detailed map data.
      Track Draw
      Printing
      View in Google Earth
      Advanced geocache support
      Geotagging photos
      Photo waypoints
Integrated support for publishing photos online
      Track and route play back
Trouble is, that when I try to use Base Camp, it shows so little detail as to be pretty much useless. It only seems to support the N American maps , and even with my Zumo attached to the Mac, it will not recognise or find my European Mapping.
So, basically my unclear question was ' Am I missing something and doing something wrong, or is Base Camp only ever designed to work with the American versions " ?

Sorry if my question in original post was unclear.

No, I don't think it is a Mac issue in this case . The crappy Road Trip is a Mac issue, as it is so sluggish, but I don't think Base Camp is. May be wrong though.
I understand that Garmin are at the NEC Bike Show, so I'll see if I can get any joy from them on Friday. They need to get their act together for Mac software, as we Mac owners expect Mac software to work straight out of the box !!!! :DWe've got used to software that works, and Road Trip certainly doesn't, but I won't go on - I'd hate to upset a PC owner on here........

Maybe a bit late but tripped over this:

Odd that BaseCamp installs to a different Garmin directory than MapSource. BaseCamp install created a Garmin folder in the Programs directory, whereas MapSource installed into its own directory on the C: drive (PC).

So, I have TopoCanada on the C:Garmin directory with Mapsource and Topo US in the other directory with BaseCamp. Mapsource doesn’t find the US map and BaseCamp doesn’t find the Canada map.

The US maps didn’t give a choice regarding their install directory, but the Canada maps did so will try installing Mapsource and Canada into the Program directory with BaseCamp.

ARGH.

Hi, just done a search and found this issue that you had with Base Camp. Did you ever get sorted as I have the same problem. Down loaded Base Camp but it is not detailed enough. It just shows main roads and large towns. I have latest maps of western europe on my Zumo 550.
Just about to give up on Base Camp and revert to using Mapsource on pc.
Any help would be great.
Cheers
Doug.

My BaseCamp is just as detailed as my Mapsource using the same maps. :nenau

I don't wish to be insulting but you do have the detail slider turned to max? I'm assuming also that you have selected the correct map?

Same here, Basecamp has the same detail as Roadtrip but without the infuriating sluggishness.

Have just received back from Garmin my recon Zumo 550, when I tried to use it I had the same as you (Not a lot of detail) however in Base camp I had full detail.

Found out that the latest update you cannot load all of Europe as detailed maps you are restricted to Max 2Gb.

To get the detail you have to use map install to install the detail maps of the area you want to navigate.

If you do not get full detail in Base camp you have to chesk maps are unlocked and that you have downloaded to Base camp as well as your Zumo.

Final Final you have to ensure that you have the same version in Base Camp as in your Zumo

Probably find you have not downloaded the detailed maps onto the Mac.

If yoiu connect the Zumo to the Mac and then use Basecamp - detail will return.

Plug in the zumo.....

Base camp is low resolution until you plug in the zumo then you have full detail.

It's not too user friendly though:(

You are correct. If I connect my Zumo the detailed map is there. How do I get/download this detailed map onto the mac and where do I put it [which file/folder] so that I can use Base Camp with the same amount of detail without having to connect the Zumo.

I have not actually done this yet as I have just moved to mac and my zumo is away with my son. But when you update the maps you download to computer first.

I will update in approx two weeks
