I have nRoute installed with World Map 4.06. I'm going to try to install Navigator 6 tomorrow but am confused as to what the unlock codes are for. Will I need these to use the software with nRoute?

I'm also using a hack to make nRoute work with a nmea GPS if that helps.

Another thing, how come Navigator 7 isn't available anywhere, is it only available pre-installed on units?

Snoopy, if you install City Navigator, you will have to unlock it to get the map detail, and ordinarily I suspect, so the GPS receiver will work with the mapping. But, you intend using a hack (GPSProxy?) to interface a ‘none Garmin’ GPS to Nroute and City Navigator mapping, I don’t know if it will work, try it and let us know.

Good luck :thumb

It does work, which is nice, but I can only find V6 of the software and I'm after v7 or v8 when it comes out. Anyone know what the latest world map software is?

Well done Snoopy, City Navigator is in V7 right now but V8 is due out any time. Its strongly rumoured that City Select is finished

No, Garmin have NO stocks of CS or CN version 7 left......

I bought a Quest at Christmas and now have an email from Garmin informing me that I will get the free upgrade to version 8 of City Navigator as there will NOT be a version 8 of City Select.

Dear Chris

Thankyou for your patience the past few months. Due to unexpected high demand Garmin no longer have any supply of the version 7 upgrades. Garmin will not be producing any more upgrades to version 7 due to the fact that version 8 will be available towards the end of January. Garmin will also be discontinuing the City select software as it has reached it limitations of what it can do. What Garmin have done is allow your current GPS to be upgraded to the City Navigator software. The City Navigator has a improved routing algorithm compared to the City Select. This will improve the routing on your GPS.
You will be contacted by Garmin via email when version 8 becomes available.

I am eagerly awaiting the release of version 8 now!!!!

Surely the mapping is data and therefore cannot have a 'improved routing algorithm' (only a program in a PC or GPS can have a algorithm).

Picky I know, but if your technical support uses buzz words rather than information then what else is incorrect ?

PS isn't it past the 'end of January' now ?

Computer programs are just data (when not being run),

Other data tends to blur the lines when (like the "data" that this web page is made from) runs little bits of code to give added functionality...

Exactly where the slight differences between CN and CS originate I have no clue, but it is concievable that there are little programs in the CN data that give the "text to speach" capability of reading off road names etc...

So perhaps they are not using incorrect buzz words?

So is V7 and V8 only supplied on the units themselves, as no-one seems to have Garmin CD's?

I'll pay for V8 if I can assert NRoute will do what I'm after.

I think PanEuropean said that CN 7 was a version made for the new 2720 which has traffic info, so you wouldn't use it for a quest or 2610.

I assume that they are offering the City Navigator version of Mapsource along with the maps. I guess the the "improved routing algorythm" applies to routes built on the PC NOT routes built on the Quest, unless of course they are upgrading the firmware as well to read the City Navigator maps instead of the City Select ones. All the talk about this implies that the data format of the maps is somewhat different, and City Navigator data must be more compressed as allegedly more mapping fits into a memory card than before. So maybe there has to be a firmware update for each and every Garmin.

I will wait and see.......

Sorry but computer programs are 'code' and the maps are 'data'
Picky I know, but correct.

I love talking to psuedo technical support people, they sort of know but nobody in marketing actually gives them correct information.
Maybe thats the problem; marketing....

You are making it more complicated than it is.

- There are plenty of CD's out there. I have all versions from 4 to 8 on CD or DVD. There should be someone living close to you who could provide you with a copy.

- Both City Navigator and City Select could be used in all Garmin models. It was only an issue of "packaging" which map they sold with which GPS. Garmin had the idea that they could make more money by selling a "better" map with the Street Pilot models. Maybe Garmin paid different prices for different maps to the map supplier? Anyway - the difference will disappear with V8.

- There are no algorithms in the maps. But the map data is different. Navigator contains more road data used by the routing algorithms in the GPS. Therefore routes calculated using a Navigator map may sometimes be "better" than a route calculated using a Select map. Also the driving instructions may be more detailed when a Navigator map is used.

- The routing algoritms are different in different GPS devices. This means that the resulting route may be different between GPS devices even if the same map is used.

- The firmware for most newer GPS models is already updated and compatible with the new compact map format. I don't know what the situation is for the older models. Plenty of info is available at www.garmin.com.

- My guess is that if the new NT map format can't be read by the older GPS models, Garmin will provide the V8 map also in the old format.
