Garmin i3

Did you just load the mapping that you use with your SPIII onto the i3. What happens to the more up to date pre-loaded maps on it, do they stay on it?

If it's erased them then theres no way of getting them back is there?

Whoops.........

I used a new Transflash memory card.

I see now, do the waypoints (Favorites) stay on the unit or do these have to be re-loaded onto the 2nd memory card with the extra maps?

It keeps the waypoints, and recently found places. Furthermore, waypoints can be up- & down-loaded into MapSource. Routes cannot be saved.

Only one Via can be used, as far as I can see.

I have suggested to RAM land Boss .. to consider using a re-worked RAM-B-230 (aka the butt plug) double ball adaptor, leave one end as B size 1" ball and give the other end a new 17mm rubber mould to pop into the i3. Finish it off with RAM-B-201 and RAM-B-231Z. IMO .. this would work on a bike and be better than what I have seen and not get shaken to bits as it would have 3 ball joints.

But the i3 isn't waterproof in any shape or form, due to the speaker holes, so why bother, I'm going to use the i3 in the car and Quest on bike(s)

JB and Steve , how very true indeed but its ignored, as many will fit'em regardless of water or weatherproof capability .. ditto.. for Navman, TT Go and PDA's in general. Many will buy 'em without a thought of how they will mount it - this becomes an afterthought - just see my mailbox on a Monday.

data cards and connecting to PC

I like the sound of one of these i3's for my car. A pal of mine got one from Woolies before Xmas for £179 so at £99 they're a bargain. Are you saying they come with some form of data card, and can you explain again how you would upload the whole of Europe onto one. Can you work out your routes on a PC and then upload to the unit as per Quest; GPSV etc?

Many thanks

Will

I have managed to use a spare unlock code, so now have all of Europe available :D

Please bear with me , like most of us, I'm new to this stuff. Are you saying, that you have got the whole of Europe street level, on a £99.00 GPS unit ?

Sincere apologies if I have just asked a seriously stupid question :o

Will, I agree, at £99 the i3 is a bargain; I've just bought another as a gift for my son. The i3 uses a Transflash card, which is a mini-SD card normally used in mobile phones. They are easy to get & quite cheap - just paid £15 for a 256mb card (although the package was damaged). The largest capacity card is, I believe, 2Gb - although I have no idea whether the i3 would cope with this size.

As to how I've loaded Europe - I already have a Streetpilot III, with City Navigator for the whole of Europe( the i3 comes pre-loaded with UK/NI only). Garmin allows you to 'unlock' the maps for 2 GPS units, so I used my 'spare' unlock and, with Mapsource on a PC, downloaded some European maps. If you don't already have City Navigator/Select, then you are a bit stuf*ed, although Garmin will be releasing Transflash cards pre-loaded with other countries - best guess £99 for France.

You can't plan routes using Mapsource and then transfer them to the i3, so it's not like a Streetpilot or Quest. You can, however, plot waypoints and move them across quite easily.

Jonnie, there are no stupid questions about GPS :) I haven't got the whole of Europe on a £99 unit, but I could have had I bought a bigger memory card, quite easily. But (see above), I already had City Navigator.

I have SatNav in my car, with UK & France CDs. I'm off for a long weekend with a bunch of mates to Gent (Belgium) and, rather than forking out for another CD, or using basemap routing (how 1990s  ), I'll just use the i3. I doubt whether the i3 is practical for a bike but, then again, there are guys using PDAs  The i3 only really has 2 buttons = no touchscreen. If they had made it waterproof .........

Hope this helps

Chasr....Thanks for the reply.....and thanks for not taking the p**s.

GPS !?.....I'm getting there.....I'm getting there....... :)

I wonder if there is a firmware upgrade for the i3 to enable planned routes on Mapsource to be used. That would be handy. I expect most of these units use the same or similar GPS engines. An insider at Garmin R&D could be a very helpful recruit. I'm sure that folk on this site would 'help with testing'.

There was an update for my i3 (which came with City Nav NT V8 so was the latest spec) so Garmin are doing updates. It would be nice to be able to transfer planned routes, but I would settle for being able to use unlimited vias.

My two local Somerfields are all "convenience stores" ... anybody know how I can identify a store that sell these i3's??

It was not obvious from the store finder section of their website. :(

Best bet is to go back to their website store finders and phone around - that's what I did and, unlike Dixons/PC World/Currys, the people I spoke to all were very helpful. There are 2 left in Kwik Save, Corby.

For those that haven't found the storefinder links, here they are;- find your nearest Somerfield here; http://www.somerfield.co.uk/site/stores/storefinder.asp ,and your nearest Kwik Save here; http://www.kwiksave.co.uk/storefinder.asp .

THANKS FOR THE TIP OFF ON THE i3. JUST BOUGHT 2 FROM SOMERFIELDS AT STAFFORD. I RANG AND THEY RESERVED THEM FOR ME. HAD TO COLLECT WITHIN A COUPLE OF HOURS. IF YOU ARE STILL AFTER ONE THEY HAVE 2 LEFT.
