When updating the maps, does it also update the pre-loaded Poi's including speed cameras?

A previous update on my 660 removed all references to speed cameras, as the are/were illegal in France...

Never bothered with them anyway (the speed camera warnings, not the French) :D

.... but all the other POI's get updated, which I think is why the new updates won't fit into the device.. unless you expand the memory.

Its never updated the garmin speed cameras on my zumo , they are seriously out of date now.

Speed cameras are a different subscription. IMHO you can get better than the Garmin speed camera data, namely Pocket GPS World.

However, mapping updates do include the POIs that are embedded in the mapping data. Basically these are the ones that you can see in Mapsource/Basecamp when you zoom in close. These include locations such as hotels, petrol stations etc.

It might be confusing but you can also have custom POIs that are independant of the mapping data, speed cameras are an example, but these can also include hotels, petrol stations etc. In fact any thing that has a position on the surface of the planet can be included as a custom POI.

Ok, thanks. That is what I suspected, so Pocketworldgps seems to be the best option, although I did come across an alternative - I think it was called something like GPS Data, where a one-off registration fee is only £4 - not sure how good the database is though

I use pocket gps world, and have a lifetime free updates as I reported a money making machine :) though I'd still use it if I had to pay the subscription.

Not the most exiting subject but most of the larger supermarket chains also publish POI files for download - helpful when you need to provision en route, refuel, etc., etc. There's also a number of campsite POI files - or you can map your own POI's (or is it P'sOI?).
