My eTrex Vista has arrived and what a great toy it is!

What I'd like to do is put the roads and dirt roads (lots of those) into the map base, is the Worldwide CD worth my buying? Given that it enhances the detail and allows you to add more yourself.

Although I've downloaded the waypoints onto Gartrip I don't seem to make much headway after that... early days yet but this looks like a bit of useful fun.:D

Go to Garmin World map page.

In the upper right of the page you will see'MapSource map Viewer', click the World Map link just under that. This will open a window that will allow you to zoom in on Cyprus and reveal the level of map detail WorldMap will give you.

I bought the World map before my recent trip through Albania. The level of detail is just about identical to the base map ie. not very accurate and not a lot of use. It does show general directions, town etc. but not much in the way of roads.

Not Much Point...

The map viewer is handy, but as said the level of detail isn't really any greater than that of the base map, the few roads on that have been moved in the past 10 years anyway!

Worldmap

Pretty useless really only a little more informative than the standard basemap. I am off to Kefalonia in the summer and used my gps the last time I was there. You never get entirely lost but then you are never entirely sure just how far the gps error circle extends. 90% of the roads on Kefalonia are not shown on either the basemap or the Worldmap. Do you think Garmin are trying to get us all to go to merica ?

All may not be lost. It is possible to obtain software that will allow you to calibrate maps that have been scanned into your computer. From this calibrated map you can create waypoints and routes. Download these to your GPS, though no map detail is downloaded the routes and waypoints are. Needless to say this software will display track and waypoint you generate in the field.

I've downloaded small sections of British OS maps, stitched them together in Photodelux and calibrated the resulting large map, large enough to cover Cyprus.

Any names for this software? And where do you download the maps from?

Sorry, no idea. I used GPSy, but it's Mac only. However, you can bet that for every one suitable Mac program there'll be 4 for Windows. A bit of googlin' and hunting around should turn them up.

The British OS maps came from something like Multimap, I don't know what the situation is with regard to Cyprus.
