Hi, anyone tried running Mapsource on a netbook? Considering getting a netbook (with Intel Atom N270 processor) to take away on bike, if it will run Mapsource. Had no response from Garmin when I asked if they had tried it. Has anyone tried this? If so does it work to an acceptable level?
thanks

Of course it will work, not as fast as a full blown computer but good enough.

Copy the mapsource discs to an external harddrive and install from there.

Using Mapsource and CN EU 2011.10b on this Samsung N150 netbook with 2gb RAM. Not much slower than a big laptop. Just need the external CD / DVD drive to get the initial mapsource on easily, then I use the download option for the updated mapping.

I run MapSource on the Acer netbook I'm using now and it is fine - but I'm not sure that I would bother loading MapSource if my netbook only had a small hard-disk (or was using a small amount of solid state memory).

if one is careful and plans where the program and the maps are stored it can run well on the ssd asus.

I've got it on mine together with the wanderlust, openstreet and garmin maps needed for last year's trans Americas and next year's rtw rides...

Be careful as the newer version (city navigator) of Garmin map source don't let you choose where to install it.

I run it on my EEPC which has the solid state memory option and the Intel Atom processor. As has been already stated there are issues as regards speed, but it will do the job. Of greater concern is the way the SS memory fills up. It is possible to end up with insufficient spare memory on the C drive to set up temporary files. The whole issue of memory usage on these units is the subject of much debate on other forums. I downloaded a utility which ensures that all installed programmes are automatically installed on D. I can't temember where I found it, but there shouldn't be any problem finding it. Google is your friend.

For the eeepc get the biggest SD card you can, stuff it in the holder.
Boot to the BIOS and tell it use that card as a hard disc. Simples...
But! the card MUST be left in when you boot up or the system throughs a wobbly. Then put all your programs on that card and save your C: drive for the OS alone.

thanks for your replies all:). Went for an ASUS EeePC and mapsource runs absolutely fine...in fact it shows how creaky the old desktop is getting as it probably runs at least as well on the new toy as on the desktop.

Very interesting - I was hoping to do this.
One question to all you EEEPC users - are you running Windows or Linux?
I wasn't sure if MapSource was compatible with Linux (which my EE701 is running). Thanks!

Samsung N110 works ok. as previous post states remember where it is installed. ensure you have sufficient harddisk space on C:\ if you are going to upgrade your initial install. forgot that trick on my desktop, scratched my head for ages trying to update my initial install which aborted because of lack of space on the c:\ partition, don't remember if any error messages came up advising which upgrade failed.

N110 came partitioned into c:\ & d:\ each 70gb

Mapsource is an MS Windows application so it will not work with Linux directly. There is an 'emulator' called Wine which might run it.... I've just checked here and it gives it a gold rating so you might be in luck..

If the version of Linux you have installed is the original Asus one I'd definitely dump it in favour of some of the better Linux variants. There are even some out there especially customised for the EEEPC.

Cheers for that Beepster. That Wine thing looks interesting.
It is the standard ASUS version of Linux that mine's running - will look out for upgrades too. Cheers.
