Hi,

Does anyone know if it's possible to upload GPX routes files to Motorrad V via Bluetooth (from iPhone or Android)?

OR

Do I need to plug it to the PC Basecamp every time I want to upload a new route?

Thanks
Jake

You cn load a route from another Nav V via Bluetooth. Very easy and VERY quick

But, from your PC you woud have to use Basecamp.

And not sure how you would get a GPX onto your iPhone/iPad, so am not aware if yu could use BT to transfer to the Nav V

What does the manual say?

You would expect the 130 page manual be be pretty thorough, however when you take out the multiple language index and all of the other pages that are in foreign languages then you are left with pages 9 - 15 in English, which just about covers how to install the battery and connect a Bluetooth device!!

Very easy to do from the Tyre program on your Windows PC or from that new MotoGoLoco site.
Never tried doing it from a phone or tablet.

You can store the files on a folder in the phone, like the downloads folder. Make sure the file is a .gpx for Garmin. If you can connect via BT to the nav all you have to do is transfer the file. This way you can email the route, download from the email on the mobile and use BT to transfer the file to the nav. I have not tried this so let us know if this works.

Or vice versa you can plan the route in TYRE or basecamp. Save it, use a file converter like ITNconverter, change the file to compatible format for the phone based navigation app and upload it in the itinerary folder. Open the app on your phone, select the route you have uploaded. This works quite well with Android based Sygic nav app. Only problem is you have to check that the route calculated is the same as planned because of the different software. This I have done several times.

Thanks for all replies.

For the record - the manual is useless in that respect.

I usually plan all my routes in BaseCamp.
I found it amusing that a £650 device with Garmin Cloud storage (BaseCamp), Garmin Smart Link app on my smartphone, there is no easy way to transfer gpx routes onto the Nav V, without taking it off the mount and physically plugging it in to the PC. :hammer

I have sent this query to Garmin but they have been silent for the past 3 weeks.

tanneman - I will try your solution and report back.

Thanks
J.

Hi

If you have the Garmin Smart Phone link app you can send previous routes or new destinations by bluetooth direct to the satnav

For a £650 device .... did you know that the Garmin keyboard does not have the underscore symbol? :blast Welcome to the trash world of Garmin usability! When they wake up you will receive a 'template' of an email!

This is because Garmin is the only technology company whose products get progressively less useful with each new version. I have a Nav5, fully "integrated" with the "control wheel" on my new RT. Compared to my beloved Zumo 550, it's a piece of shit. It has endless features that have no benefit whatsoever but can't even do the basics properly.

Oh - and don't get me started on why the Mp3 player on the Nav5 won't work if you fork out the extra £1,000 for an RT with the built-in audio system!

I got my Nav5 free with the bike. If I'd known then what I know now, I'd have bought an RT without the audio, saved a grand and then haggled for something more useful than the Nav5 instead - like a chocolate teapot.

I feel the same way with the nav 4 and the wc wheel thingy , FKN useless, should have stuck with my tom tom and saved 600 quid:blast

Well, I think that the Nav 5, the wheel thingy, and Basecamp work really well. Excellent bits of kit. And the music from the Nav V into my Sena SMH10R works a treat and is audible with turning up the volume to at least 170kph

I really dont understand the problem - rather than simply connect your Nav 5 to the PC or Mac you want to transfer the file to your phone and then transfer it again to the Nav 5 - simply to save the effort of taking off the mount? Seems like a labour not worth the effort to me.

I have had my GSA and Nav 5 since May and have found the Nav 5 and the bikes interface superb - you just have to get to know the manual - which takes time and use of the Nav 5 to consolidate - there are facilities available on the Nav 5 that you didn't know you needed I admit but most are useful and the Wheel makes accessing them simple and safe. Basecamp again needs some time to get the most out of - its not a plug and play program - but it is very good at what it does - again, read the manual if you want to avoid the common pitfalls and problems that get posted on here on a regular basis.

I actually connect my Nav 5 to my Mac when planning routes - and I plan a lot! - and use the map on the Nav 5 to plan - no problems with transferring routes to and fro because I am using the Nav 5's map.

Whatever, each to their own - shame to see so much bile directed at Garmin and BMW when a bit of time reading the manual and thinking about what you want to achieve would sort the problem on 99% of occasions.

basecamp is the stupids.

google map is 1000% better (but migrating google maps to Tyre is too painful)

the nav5 + wheel + watercooled GS = pretty impressive.

long story short : multi day trip , I will plot my route on the nav5 unit itself (use a stylus from phone like a Samsung Note). Its easy.

I agree wholeheartedly with that final para

I don't.

I have an RT - a later (and more expensive) model than the GS and yet half the features of the Nav5 won't work with the RT, depsite the claimed "integration" - no matter how much time you spend reading the manual.

I'm a life-long Garmin fan but I do think that the Zumo 550 is a vastly superior piece of kit for planning and leading group rides - far easier to change on the go etc etc. The Nav5 is just to clever for its own good - and I'll bet it breaks if you drop it!

I get your point. But it is 2015. There is Garmin Cloud! What is the point of saving all routes to the Garmin Cloud in BaseCamp if you can't see them on NAV5? IMHO its pointless.
I dont want to plug any device. I want to be able to plan my routes using BaseCamp PC knowing that those routes are wirelessly synced with R1200GS NAV5 parked in the garage. Am I really asking for too much?
Lets dont forget that we are talking premium products here, not £99 TomTom...
