Is it possible to update maps for free??? I just went to Garmins site and I nearly bloody fell over when i saw the cost of the update.... I could go and buy another satnav for what they are asking. It's blatantly taking the piss, and Im unsurprised to be honest. Is there a way of updating the maps that are already on my device for free, in a simple (just like me!!!) manner that is easy to follow and doesnt mean a dozen different steps or more to guarantee I get confused and F*&^ it up.......OR........ should i............. Just get my coat!!........

Well there is but it involves software piracy so I'm not going to tell you how to do it. By far the easiest way is to buy a subscription to NuMaps Lifetime.

I bought mine a few months ago from Handtec for about £47.00. I see they're now asking £52.49 for the same product.

awww go on tell me anyway. I shall not hold you personally responsible if it chooses to route me over the top of a cliff if i go looking for short cuts......

It wouldn't do that. You can obtain genuine Garmin maps by illicit means and that's all I'm saying on the subject other than it's really not difficult to find them.

Or to stay legit you could use the openstreetmap mapping

£50 isn't much for mapping updates for the life of your sat nav if you ask me, much cheaper than it used to be if you updated annually.

If you have only just (or haven't yet) registered your GPS with Garmin, you can probably get one free mapping update.

The NuMaps is, IMHO, excellent value.

I've just downloaded this from a torrent site. now what do I do to get it on my garmin nuvi760(t). when I open the citynavigator file i have the following files :
Garmin City Navigator Europe NT 2012.10 ID followed bya 4 digit number
when I open that file i have then got
gmap3d
IMG
gmaptz
a winrar file called d2505040a
opening gmap3d gets a file called gmap3d.img
Can anyone help transferring this to my Garmin. Its connected to my PC via a usb lead into the bottom of the garmin..

HOWEVER, I have the strangest feeling that when this file was downlaoded at the end of the filename (in brackets) it said MAPSOURCE.....

help!!!

Please...

I don't mean to sound unhelpful but I don't think this forum is the right place to be asking questions about software piracy, which is essentially what you're engaging in.

Additionally any downloaded mapping is going to need unlocking to your specific GPS for it to work. This requires an unlock code that only your GPS will recognise, Garmin generate and issue these so long as you pay for the privilege. It will probably work in Mapsource OK though.

Yes there are ways but they're quite involved and illegal :blagblah

The trouble and time this will take if you're intending to crack every update isn't really worth it, esp. considering NuMaps Lifetime is now only about £50. Previously mapping updates were considerably more expensive and only once a year.

Well it doesnt matter now cos its bollocksed. Anyone got a cheap garmin satnav for sale. Im not joking by the way Ive ballsed it up bigstyle. Cheers for all the help by the way, oh and on a technical note i was not aware that was i was doing was ILLEGAL, i was under the impression that they were shared versions, but then again i seem quite naive when it comes to computers in fact anything more technical than a kettle has me reaching for the headache tablets... I was told it MAY all end in tears and now it bloody well has. damn blast and bugger.....

i was not aware that was i was doing was ILLEGAL,

You're trying to download copyrighted material for which the copyright owner makes a charge and you didn't think that it was illegal???

Unless you've physically broken it then there's a chance for recovery. Assuming that it's registered with Garmin by you then you should be able to resurrect it with their help (that's why it'll need to be registered).

And you were trying to crack their locked mapping :yelrotflm
