garmin quest

I seem to recall that some people are getting v8 NT with their new buys - Nuvi, 2720, Quest 2, things like that. :nenau
Exactly! :clap

I give tutorials (free) in using MapSource to friends who are beginners. They need to install their maps including unlock code on my computer or else we can't practise upload to and customizing of the GPS unit.

Note that this is absolutely legal since the unlock code only opens the map for download to a specific GPS unit. And you are, as a registred owner of that unit, allowed to install on any computer you plan to use together with your GPS. :type

went into halfords to buy quest at £269 only to be told by sales person that they did not have very good coverage of northen ireland or uk,and that the memory might not be enough for europe, can any one help, thanks

The clue here is in the third word

I bought a Quest last year and it has been very good. UK coverage is fine, though new roads are missing from the software as you'd expect.

Also the Halfords chap is correct in a way when they talk about the memory not being enough for Europe. If you want turn by turn routeing then you won't get all of Europe on there - Quest memory capacity is 243Mb after all. If you're planning lots of big tours around large parts of Europe then I would suggest looking at a 2610 which is very popular.

However, you can simply plot a route to your destination area and select the maps around that route and around the destination which frees up the memory very well. I did that on a trip to Garmisch last year and had coverage for western Austria, northern Italy (hurrah for the mighty Stelvio :bounce1 ) and the routes to and from my home. Simple.

I will be doing just the same for a visit to the WW1 battlefields in June.

I know that there were some amazingly cheap deals on the Quest up until recently but they seem to have all gone now.

It's a good choice so good luck with whatever you go for :thumb

That's coz all the bar stewards on here bought them up from PC World and Dixons - leaving none for us poor people who have no access to either store :D :bounce1

My Quest has ... Buy it you, won't regret it

Exactly what he said... Every word...

V7 doesn't include the new sections of the M50, and the M4 and other roads opened since V7 was released, but this is what you've got to accept and plan appropriately beforehand.. The mapping starts going out of date as soon as it's released.. I may consider buying the V8 upgrade when it's available.. My test is always to look for Doolin in Co. Clare.. If anyone has V8 can they see if it exists?

I even brought my Quest on a skiing holiday a couple of weeks back.. Worked a treat (with an external antenna so I didn't have to carry it around).. Even worked on the plane on the way over.

On the bright side though it's pushed the second hand prices back up to a reasonable level.

quest 2

buy the quest 2,you get all of europe pre loaded down to street level, also loads of more room to load other maps, :thumb

just of subject a wee bit. does the bike kit for the garmin quest have a audio output jack. to use with intercom unit for speech directions as direction only seem to be when the unit is powerd in a car

:thumb bought quest today it came wit v6,how do i get it upgrade to v7 or v8 if its out yet, thanks.

You should follow the instructions in the box....

Bottom line is - you log in to the Garmin website and register the unit. You will then get the most current map version for free. Please note that V8 will be released within 4 weeks so it may be a good idea to wait a few days.

try finding the BALLYWILLAN ROAD and GATESIDE ROAD back roads between Portrush and Coleraine
and essensial if you want to get home from NW200 practices quickly :thumb

or NEWMILLS ROAD back road to Ballymoney from Coleraine

these roads are well used

v8 looks more like the thing :thumb I've V7 on my 2610 and the minor roads in NI and SI are not on it. Brill for France and Norway last year tho including roads with no tarmac surface.!! :)

The rumour mill suggests that TeleAtlas has done a deal with OSI and OSNI for their digital mapping which is detailed for the whole island. So Tom Tom may leapfrog Garmin (who use Navteq maps) in terms of coverage. Having said that I'd still buy a Garmin because of the PC route planning. :)

Already V6 is great in Norway (and Sweden). Really great with also the smallest country-side roads included. :)
