But if you didn't have, would you still buy another over a 2610 (or similar)?

Greg
SPIII = £100 on ebay, 2610 = £300. I'd probably still go for the SPIII as I only use if for touring. If I used it for other reasons that would require rapid auto re-routing in cities, I'd probably go for the 2610.

If you're that bothered about re-calculation times, get another GPS. Personally, I plan in routes with the auto re-route option turned off - essential if you want to stick to a planned route.

That is how mine is set, in fact it has been every since I bought. :thumb

I did'nt like the fact that when you did go "off-route" the new route started from the point that you got lost. Plus, as we all know it can take several minutes to recalculate.

If you do go off route, just use your loaf to get back to the pink line, not rocket science is it. :nenau

However, I have replaced the 128mb card for a 256mb card at the start of last year after one of the Garmin updates, to V7 I think?

To be honest, I really like my SPIII. It does everything that I want it to do, so for once I am quite happy with what I have got.

The pace of change on these is amazing. I remember when I first got interested in a GPS sytem (just 30 months ago) the SPIII was what most people I knew seemed to be using. I used one quite happily to guide me around Germany (and Berlin city centre rush hour traffic) only 15 months ago. I was so impressed that I bought the 2610 8 months ago and now they're discontinued - hell I reckon they only produced them for about 2 years. :eek

If you're on a budget the SPIII will be ok, but for an extra £150 (and probably dropping) you can get a 2610 which I am seriously impressed with. Yes, I did find the recalculation time of the SPIII long in comparison with the 2610 (in reality it was probably a minute) but I used to just pull over and wait for it. Don't forget that with the SPIII you will probably need a 256 Mb data card if you're touring Europe, which makes the 2610 even more attractive. :thumb

Just incase anyone else does do this.

A friend was in contact with garmin last week as he was having problems with a 256mb datacard.

He was told that when the 256mb datacard was released it was compatible with the stp 3 but due to parts which are needed to make it compatible no longer available they are now not able to work with the stp 3.

so if your having problems with the datacard thats most likely what it is. They also said if you recently bought one try and take it back to the shop/dealer you got it from and exchange it for 128mb cards or send it back to them and they will exchange them for 2 x 128mb cards.

You would need to contact them to get this done though.

Hope this helps anyone for the future or if there thinking of buying one soon. :thumb

I bought a Streetpilot 111 a while back with a 128 card. Not long after I found just to get all of U.k. and Ireland on I would need a 256 card. I went to the site I had it off (www.gpsw.co.uk) and noticed they were sellin the cards BUT there was a mention of 256 garmin cards NOT being compatable with SP111.

Odd, I thought. So I got in touch with them and was told it was something to do with RoHS compliance.!! Apparentley there is too much lead in them. However, I was recommended a compatable one for about 40 less. Now I got a 128 and a 256 card that work in my SP111.

Hope that helps.

Well having picked up Mick's GPS from somewhere we had never ever been, turned it on, and auto routed to somewhere else I had never ever been I can say if you can find a SPIII for under £100 (or thereabouts) it's well worth it.
Very impressed. As a starting - and learning - point, well worth saving the £2-300 until fully versed in vaguaries of GPS use.

Yes re-routing isn't amazingly quick - but then neither is my use of the thing so not a problem. (and nice tips here already -ta) Buy and learn :thumb

Only dissapointment is that though it's large, it wouldn't double as an offensive weapon  lighter than I expected ;)

Thanks Mick, forgot to PM thanks - so I'll do it publicly instead :clap
A few evenings on PC and reading and we'll be up and running - but I may short cut that with the odd Q on t' phone. Happy Customer ;)

I have a sp111 and I like my one I have 2 x 128mb cards and 256 mb card
when used on Airhead it fits to a touratech mount and on the 1150 its on a migsel mount

used my one in europe no problems found everything I need to

yes it does take take several minutes to recalculate.

but it gives me time to stop think and drink tea and talk to the locals

and the SP111 seems to be in keeping with my airhead old and slow :D

rush rush rush I do that all day at work

if you only have the maps turned on that you need - rather than the whole of europe - then turn down the detail from max to normal - its 'almost' acceptable.

mind you - the worse thing about mine is losing reception in a hi-rise city - just when you need it :(

mines about 33 months old and i likened it to a 286 PC with an EGA screen back then :D
