OK so I got my new SPIII a couple of weekends ago, V6 version. As a matter of course I logged onto the Garmin website and requested software (specific to the SPIII) e-mail updates as and when they were available.

Well I had the first update notice arrive yesterday, but after reading the small print I am not to sure if I want or even need to download it or not?

Mine is the latest version, so do I need to do this?

If so how?

When you open the mail there is a link to the relevant Garmin page, you are then given the option to either open it or save to disk.

I understand how to save it to a folder, no problems, as I have created a folder already in My Documents, but how do you get that download into the GPS unit?

Cheers in advance

Hi

V6 is the latest version of the MapSource mapping software that normally resides on your PC. On 16th April 2004 Garmin issued V6.0.6 Beta for downloading. You'll need to read the update contents to judge whether you think it's worthwhile.

After download just follow the install instructions and the MapSource programme on your PC will automatically update. Then any map sets that you subsequently transfer to your GPS will be of the updated series.

V 2.60 is the latest version of the unit software for SPIII, issued on 3rd May 2004. Again the update contents tell you what the update contains. Once you've downloaded the update file to your PC, connect the GPS to the PC via the serial GPS cable which came with the unit and turn the GPS and the power on. Go to the folder on your PC where you saved the update and you'll see a little icon that looks like a GPS, click on this and follow the on-screen instructions.

If all else fails you could always read Garmin's comprehensive instructions/guides....;)

Cheers
