I bought a behind the ear mono earphone from Maplins, and use this over my moulded earplugs. Works fine up to around 80 mph, and even above that (which tends to mean motorays or mainroads) it alerts you to look at the screen. If on a long journey where I want to use the earphone and it starts to get a little uncomfortable, I just switch ears.
I always use the earphone when the place I'm looking for is in a town or city centre, ensuring I can concentrate on the traffic, or on foreign tours where missing a motorway junction might be slightly more annoying, but otherwise I just rely on the pictures.

would be handy in a large city/busy area, so we do have it wired up, but just enable the voice when we think we are gonna need it, but visual on the fly is good.
