They are still around and selling for about Euro 550 I think. This really pisses me off because I bought mine 2 years ago for Euro 1100 - these things depreciate faster than Kawasaki Vulcans  but having said that it's a great bit of kit :D and I would recommend it to anyone who is not travelling too far too often. If you are a Trans European traveller who wakes up in the morning in Belgium and decides you would like to take breakfast in St Tropez - the GPS V is not for you because it has limited map storage capacity. If however you take a few trips away now and again but the rest of the time stay in and around your local region the map capacity is more than adequate. I have about 2/3rds of Belgium installed in detail and this is good enough until I want to go to Germany or Holland. This means thinking ahead and uploading the maps the evening before. If you can stretch to the SPIII do it - you get colour , much more memory , audio and I think it recalculates and works out routes quicker.
You can pick up an SPIII for lower proces almost every day now that the 2610 is on the market so shop around and you may get lucky.

....or you could get one of these handy 'little' systems. All new Pioneer 'motorcycle' DVD Navigation system with handy carry case.....designed for the biker who has everything ;)

complete with handy waterproof cover too - to protect your handy GPS from water damage. By the way these things are DVD driven so the mapping capacity is huge , they are very fast and you can watch your favourite movie whilst riding your bike now too !! :P

Richie, I've just gone through the same torment. I wanted more memory than 19Mb the V uses, liked the idea of memory cards to have data on (like an MP3 player) which can be "pre-recorded" but couldn't justify the cost of an SPIII. I've just got a Streetpilot Colour Map which was the forerunner to the SPIII. No auto routing or voice commands but everything else, pretty much.

I paid £385 on eBay for a virtually new one with all the important kit like 64Mb & 16Mb datacards (I also have a 128Mb card already from eBay.de), leads for power & PC, carry case, beanbag mount for car & UK/Europe Map CD's. The only other thing I would like to have had would be a USB card programmer. One comes as std with the SPIII.

BTW, I also got a Touratech mounting bracket from eBay.de for £16 (£25 incl delivery)

HTH, FWIW, etc......:)

You might want to check out the Irish mapping first; pretty much every manufacturers Irish mapping is of a much lesser quality/quantity than the UK

I thought I knew what I wanted/needed but I've just found out how much of a tosser I am. So is the Garmin III and the Garmin V the samething??????
If I buy one off ebay in Germany do they have multilingual docs or do I have to get one off someone else. HELP.....

Schtop!. You're clearly not ready to buy a GPS yet. Look at the Garmin website and read the description of each GPS unit. Work out what you want from a GPS, ask questions on the board, see which unit matches these requirements closest. Look for the best price for that unit. Buy it.

Garmin - we only let you buy when you're ready.

Richie

The III is basic compared to the V and doesn't have auto-routing. Great if you want to know where you are but not how to get where you're going.

The V has 19Mb memory, the III has 1.44Mb.

The V (deluxe) is supplied with the city select software fully unlocked for Europe. I don't believe the III comes with mapping software.

The V is about £362 GBP new (getting cheaper all the time!) and around the £300 mark on eBay.

Garmin GPS V Deluxe

Garmin GPSIII Plus

Yes, I've got a V :D

Richie, SLOW DOWN - what's the hurry? Read the GPSW links in Adam's post (or the Garmin link in mine) and do your research before rushing in to buy something. All the information's there and these things come up for sale on EBay all the time.

Did you already have a look at the new Garmin GPS60C and CS

http://www.garmin.com/products/gpsmap60c/
http://www.garmin.com/products/gpsmap60cs/

They use the same City Select Software as the GSP V but have a 56mb memory and routing capability.

To throw another spanner in the works, wot about a Garmin 176/176 colour? Paul G has the std & Flying Scotsman has the colour version.............

It can take memory cards, but doesn't have voice prompts or auto routing.
