I've organised a trip to Normandy next May 09 to visit some of the D-Day locations; I've got 24 of us going (14 bikes) and I need to arrange a ride out to take in some of the locations.

Does anybody out there have Garmin Waypoints for the following.

Pointe Du Hoc
Pegasus Bridge
Omaha Beach
Mereville Battery (I think that is the name)
Any British cemetary near these locations.
The large American cemetary where the Omaha victims are buried - I don't have the name.

Any other locations that are worth visiting?

Thanks all :clap:thumb

I have emailed a gdb and a gpx file to your homepage
Enjoy your trip

Normandy Waypoints

Attached a few waypoints and notes acquired over several trips to Normandy.

Best to read up a little before going, would suggest Max Hastings Book
‘Overlord’

If you need any further info, please PM me.

Cheers, enjoy the trip.

Not wishing to sound negative, but why do you need garmin Waypoints? All the places that you have listed are so easy to find, just follow the Overlord sign posts on the D514.

Buy Major & Mrs Holts guide to Normandy and the D-Day beaches and it is all so easy no GPs required.

On a positive note visit Battery Longues at Longue Dur Mer, just down the coast from Arromanches. Visit Arromanche, has one of the best run museums in Normandy.

If you start at Merville Battery then Pegasus Bridge then just keep to the D514 and follow it to Grandcamp Maisey you will take in most of the relevant places. There is a Battery just south of Grandcamp Maisey (Battery Maisy) that dispels the myth that it was vital that Pont Du Hoc was captured.

Use the map Michelin 513 or IGNs 06/07 and you will find it much more rewarding than following he 'screen'.

Thanks all for the contributions. :clap

Steve E - that's really useful info regarding the D514. I've not toured there before so I wasn't aware of the excellent signposting. Will definitely take in the Battery Longues. We are staying in a chateau about 10 miles south of Cherbourg so will take your advice and head for the coast road and work our way down. :thumb

Correction to Notes

PEGASUS BRIDGE

HP,

Just a friendly "heads up" but there is a mis-print in the co-ordinates for Pegasus Bridge on the Word document. I only noticed it when I went to enter it on Mapsource - as it happened I already had it, but the two WPs didn't tally. The Mapsource waypoint is spot on, but there is a digit wrong in Word, which will put you 1.5 miles out. Hope you don't mind me pointing it out. Regards

Thanks Taff

Normandie Sign Posts

Should have said in prevous post that the Sign Posts that you need to look for are:

Overlord-L'Assault (the assault) Pegasus Bridge/Sword/Juno/Gold Beaches.

D-Day- Le Choc (the Onslaught) Bayeux/Port-en-Bessin/Omaha beach/Point-Du-Hoc/Utah Beach
Objectif-un Port US Airborne/Utah Beach to Cherbourg

L'Affrontment(the Confrontation)(the British Breakout around Caen/Panzers in the Bocage.

Once you see the signs it all becomes very clear and easy to follow.

I'll second the above, very useful

A leaflet setting out the above and the routes to follow These leaflets may be obtained from the French Tourist office and are usually in evidence at the information point on the ferry, well worth seeking out.

At each main point of interest along each of the suggested tours there is usually a plague/sign post about 2.5 metres tall with a description of the principal event that occurred there. Even if not following the suggested tours, these plagues are easily identified ( dark blue , in colour with what appears to be a two tone light and dark blue ‘seagull’ emblem as an insignia ) and well worth stopping for and reading. Indeed, the plaques and the guide form a good basis to select a few of the main points of interest for those who wish to plan their own itinerary and route and give an excellent synopsis of the events at each location.

Also worth noting that you should keep your ticket if you visit any one of the official museums/interpretative centres (these are marked with a big red triangle outside) eg in Arromanches, at Pegasus Bridge etc. Once you've paid for one, the ticket will get you half price admission to any of the others :thumb

Handy thread,

I'm planning on taking a few bikes out there next may (14-17th) as well. I'll keep looking in.

As a break from the D Day areas, can anyone recommend any nice roads inland around the Suisse Normandy , or River Orne areas.

Thanks
