Garmin zumo 550 - help!

Well, I'm not sure what I have done, but I've managed to completely bollox the zumo.

I seem to remember being told to upgrade the GPS firmware by e-mail. This I did and the zumo opened and had the message "updating gps firmware" each time it was started - 1 to 100%. Although the maps loaded OK, the machine did not read any gps satellites and the gps bars on the top left remained empty.

Since trying to rectify the situation, I now have a machine which switches on for 10 seconds then goes blank.

As a; I like the zumo b; I have grown to love having a GPS, and c; they are £400+ for a new one, I would be grateful for advice as to how to proceed. I need a default, return to original setting type little black button to press.

I has not been dropped or got unduly wet recently.

I'd be on the phone to Garmin at 08-29 tomorrow morning...

try this

Remove the battery for 10 mins, re-install try it. if no good try re-installing the firmware again,be patient you'll crack it.

removing battery make no difference.
The device is not recognised by the computer - so unable to reinstall software.
Would talk to Garmin if they only answered the phone.
I'm "happy" to send it off for repair if necessary - seems a shame to trash it if it is fixable

I had an issue where (for no aparent reason) my computer would not recognise my zumo. I tried another lead (non garmin) and it work fine.
My computer still will not recognise my Zumo with the original cable.......V strange.
Give it a try................nothing to loose.

try another lead,also leave the battery out overnight.

I can never understand how a machine knows the difference between a few minutes loss of power and overnight. If it has no power, surely it has no power? Don't all the little electrons all stop in line straight away, or do the ones at the back keep shoving forward for a while?

Anything that gets upset when updating its Firmware is in a very vulnerable state...

My gut feeling is it will have to go back to Garmin (hope you get it sorted though!)

how does your pc know the date and time even when unplugged from the mains for ages?
Back up battery...
the zumo will have a capacitor to store the date and personal preferences just in case the main battery goes flat, the trick is to flatten the on board capacitor, in order for the device to reboot using fresh software from the non volatile memory.
if garmin wont mend it, whizz it over ere, ill have a look for you,nowt to lose but postage.

Zumo is back to mummy for £111 and hopefully a recon one will return.

So, zumo have sent back a zumo with a tidy 2012 mapsource.

Sadly it is a 660 rather than a 550!

It may seem churlish, but I far prefer the 550 and the GSA is hard wired to receive it. So I guess another round of "we are experiencing an exceptionally busy period, why not try the website" on the phone, Staples to post it back and more delay.

TBH once you factor in all the hidden costs, it is often better just to press order on the 'puter and wait for a new one!
