Garmin Zumo 590LM use and cable routing.

Hi Folks,

I think im about to buy a Garmin Zumo 590LM, ive had a good look about and it seems to be the winner in all areas but price. So my question is for those with one, is the hard wiring essential with the mount that comes in the box, if so can anyone tell me the routing they used so it looks tidy (R1200GSA 90th)? Pics would be much appreciated.

And before I pull the trigger on it any positive/negative comments on it or will it do me just fine?

No idea about the 590 but I have a 660 on my TC using a Migsel mount which seems to work well.
Wiring it in is a good idea. Always charged.
You can get a plug from Nippy Normans that connects to a spare connector in around your steering head that allows you to easily wire it into the bike's electrics.
Powers up up when you switch the ignition on and powers down shortly after switching off.
All you'll need is a handful of cable ties and that plug and it's straight forward to connect.
Remember to put the cover back on the mount when the sat nav isn't in the cradle. I got caught in a thunder storm in the Pyrenees last September and forgot. It played up for days until the mount dried out.

I have one fitted to an r1200gs 2011 twincam model.
The main cable is hard wired ie, permanently fixed, into the docking mount and quite thick and lengthy (about 1.75m) and terminates in several jack plugs and a USB port. I considered that the usual switched power plug adjacent to the oil cooler was too close to use as I'd need to accommodate the cable and the jack plugs in an untidy coil as the actual cable length needed to reach between the power plug and the mounting location above the clocks needs only about 0.5m. I don't use the BMW power socket which is sited in the under seat tool tray, so I ran the cable back to that point and made a soldered connection there. Remember, this socket is also switched via the vehicle ignition so works as well as the more traditional power plug.
To locate the cable properly and ensure it doesn't interfere with anything, you need to remove the fuel tank. This cable is difficult to push or pull through the tank 'tunnel' as in addition to the jack plugs, where the cable divides, a triangular shaped plastic block is fitted which will jam. I also cable tied a couple of loops of the cable to the side of the air box to use up some of the length.

My observation on the 590 in use? Good size screen let down by pale pastel colour schemes that are difficult to see in direct sun light. I also have a 390 which is a smaller screen, but it is backlit and easier to see in sunlight. There are many features on the 590 that I will not use i.e. connecting a usb drive or making a phone call from a bike??? I was seduced by the bigger screen but wish I'd got the 390 first.

listening to music and making phone calls doesn't rank highly on my list, i read somewhere gamins work better with Mac's which i have, the main thing for me is selection g a way point and an exciting way to get there which from reading the 590lm seems to do.

I have noticed a small socket infant of the triple clamps and blow the clocks, just hanging down slightly, with a cable fit to this?

that is the switched socket normally used for connecting satnavs. You need a corresponding connector available for about £15 from BMW. That is the one I have avoided using because of the need to hide so much cable and the many jack plugs.
If like me you don't want to listen to music or make phone calls, think about the 390 instead. It has the same satnav mapping features and is currently available for about £230ish. A huge saving. It also has a more simple twin core power supply cable without all the dangly jack plugs. The screen isn't that much smaller and the graphics are brighter, bolder colours. If you want it to talk to you it is blue tooth too.

I went into Vines BMW car sales and ordered the plug that fits the socket up on the head stock of the 1200. Cost was £4.95 if ordered as a car put or £15 if ordered as a bike part.
Its handy having a mate that works on the parts counter.
Its the same part number for bike or car so im told.

If it's the same bar as a LC, then no it won't. I took a part off the existing GPS cradle (TE model has GPS cradle fitted) and made it fit.

On a 90th it does but I carefully cut a section of bike inner tube and wrapped it around the bar to reduce vibration and act as a damper. Works really well.

now that's a tidy job, I take it that mount does not come in the box with the zumo?

No I'm afraid not it's silly money too for what is a machined block of aluminium. I think it was about £80

I originally bought it to fit my 550 so at least I have used it twice for that money and it comes with a nice rubber sleeve to avoid damaging the paint on the screen bar.

What was the part number?

Part No: 83 300 413 585

Its listed on the BMW parts list under tools when they cant find it.

The plug on the bike is wired as follows,

(1) Brown = ground
(2) Blue/Green = Speed Pulse
(3) Red/White = 12V

The three wires from the plug are all yellow.
