Garmin Zumo or 60csx

ok here one for you.

totaly different units, 1 good 30% cheaper than other.

so why pick zumo over the handhelp mapping

i had colorado and loved it (when worked) so got rid of it.

i dont need voice turning (as the auto direct is enough for me to use)

after thinking about auto coms etc i am on a bike, dont want to be answering my modile phone.

any mapsourse is available for both i believe.

music, i have ipod i never use so i would just hook that up into autocom instead.

so why pay more when get it cheaper?

any shed any light on this for me please?

also any on the move changes will more than likely be done with bike stopped for safety

The Zumo will come with mapping, you'll need to buy that for the 60csx as an extra I do believe, along with a MicroSD card for it to go on.

The 60csx would arguably be more robust.

Zumo comes with mounting hardware and vehicle power lead as well as car cradle for when you're in the cage. For the 60csx you'd need to buy all that stuff, that's if it actually exists...

The Zumo has a much bigger screen.

I suppose it depends on what you intend to do with the unit. If you're off across the desert or do a lot of off roading then maybe the 60csx is the one to go for. If you're more of a European road orientated rider then the Zumo would be the better choice IMHO.

i am 50/50 when comes to gps use.

use it for both road/car/trails

but when add up lot the items such as maps ets, mounts all adds up.

zumo does start make some sense

I have the 60csx and use it for everything from hillwalking/canoeing and road navigation.

The orientation can be off putting for some as the panoramic is easier on the eyes

It's robust

on bike charging isn't really an issue as a set of AA batterys will last for 3/4 days.
if you keep the backlight off or on a low setting and use the "next turn" screen where it shows the next turn (funnily enough) as a static image instead of a rolling road position,
You do need seperate mapping but that can be found on the net if you look, so you can load up road only or Off road mapping

You can do on bike charging if needed.

The 60csx has been superceeded by a new model (the number excapes me at the mo), so the 60 should be going for a good price

you can route plan on the hand held but it's a lot easier to do on a PC using Mapsource

You can get proximity alarms on the 60csx but it's a bit of a faff, so I don't use it

sometime the updating of the screen can be slow in built up areas where there's a lot of info on the screen, but this only happens on occasion, I suspect it happens when it's updating the screen and cover 2 map tiles at the same time ? and using a fast MicroSD card

You don't have the issue of the touch screen being damaged or not working through gloves, good old buttons

RAM do a set of mounts for the 60 that are superb and very flexible is there positioning

It does a electronic bread crumb so you can track back using this feature if you get turned around (I think there is quite a few Garmin units do this ?)

Thats my various thoughts on the unit, I think it a cracking wee bit of kit used it for all sorts of things for about 2/3 years now in all weathers from monsoon like rain to -20 winters out on the hills and it's never failed me once

A tricky one, and I don't think there is a right answer.

I have just bought a Garmin Oregon because I want both on and off road.

On road - junction by junction routing and directions
Off road - Following tracks over an OS map

It has a bigger screen than the 60, but loses the buttons and is all touch screen. So far, I am impressed, nearly does all I want from it albeit the screen could be bigger.

Have you seen the new Garmin Montana? It has a bigger screen than the Oregon, but does come at a price because its the latest 'must have'

Open street mapping is a good source of maps to download onto the device without having to buy garmin products.

well touch screen isnt major issue.

i like the colorado feature where had a cursor and used the arrow buttons to navigate around the map

i would prob go lifetime mapping for either unit and mapsource

i was able get a ram mount and power lead for the coloracdo for 65euro think so not too dear.

the new 62st looks nice but hear few issues with it

there are few 60xcs out cheap.

the oregon does look nice but couple of bangs or falls from bike ( iam clumsy) could damage it.

if go touch screen i will go zumo
