Garmin Zumo XT or XT2?

Why the need for the XT ? Sold mine and just use phone with MyRoute app .
I must admit ive found the MR app to be rubbish. It’s slow, and won’t work if you put in a long distance between waypoints.

Tried it but it still recalculated off route which for me is an issue as I like to wander and not be re routed by a sat nav . With the XT you can keep the route active , follow a different road and find your way back without the issue of the re route thus missing a great section of roads which are are sometimes missed when the re route happens . Great setting along with the auto skip waypoints .
Trying the new Connect Nav at the moment , struggling a bit but will give it a go as it’s a nice seamless addition to have all on the wheel .

My wife's friend would like to buy her husband a Zumo for his new to him F800.
He's off to Portugal for a trip around The Picos in the summer with some chums but does occasionally do a little bit of green laning in the UK.
She's asked me which is the better option of the 2 Zumos but as I have no knowledge of either (I have a Nav V) I thought I'd ask on here for any opinions please.
As ever TY in advance Comrades.👍

To bring us back on track, OP….

1. The XT (version 1) is not without its detractors but, on the whole it behaves pretty much OK.

2. The XT (version 2) is not seen too often on these pages. It is different to version 1 as it is more reliant on Garmin app’s. This might mean a lot to people or very little.

3. Some people just like using their phone and app’s like, MyRoute. Others don’t. Some people like to use other Garmin devices and / or Garmin devices branded BMW. Some people like TomTom devices. Some people like to create their own routes, whist others are happy to have their GPS device do it for them.

4. Some people eschew GPS devices completely and use a map. Some might claim to do this but, like motorways, maybe do use a GPS device, when they think nobody is looking.

To answer your friend‘s specific question…. An XT (version 1) will probably do….. right up to the moment, when they are told it won’t.

Yes indeed.
Thank you all again, based on the kind advice given here she's ordered an XT and has asked me to pass on her thanks to everyone as well.

I've had my Nav V for over 10 years and had a Nav IV for years before that.
Still can't make head or tail of Basecamp though.

I worked out Mapsource then Basecamp. Preferred Mapsource. I only use Basecamp as an archive now. I do most of my route planning using Google Maps & Streetview. I plot routes directly into my Zumo 390. No more than a single day per route, sometimes half a day or less, especially if doing it in a hotel after weather or some other factor dictates creating an alternative route on the hoof. Not a bad idea as practice to do this even if another tool like MRA is used most of the time. This is how I got to know the Zumo and its foibles and workarounds.

Or calls it a useless piece of junk, and launches it down the road…

yes, that was the implication of my ellipsis

I have chuckled a number of times when people on trips are sat at the breakfast table desperately trying to import a GPX file they had access to several weeks ahead.

A true comedy moment, would be when a bikermate throws his GPS app enabled phone down the road in frustration…. Only to then realise the enormity of his action.

a friend of mine bought a CAT (or similar rufty tufty brand) phone and glued it into a cradle

he kept his posh Samsung in his tankbag on a charger, acting as a wifi hotspot for the CAT.

a sensible ploy for the short of fuse

There is a member on here, whom as it happens, got to know (no names), he has done exactly that with his Garmin Navigatiin unit in frustration. Can’t recall him saying if it was on actual tour abroad or here in the UK. I’d dread if it was his actual mobile phone… 😱

This is how I tend do do stuff on the Nav V but as I usually travel alone it can be well past 9PM before I've finished riding, checked in then eaten. By the time I've unpacked, unwound and checked in at home it can be turned 10 o'clock and I quite often can't be bothered figuring out tomorrow's route at that point which means beggaring about the following morning after breakfast which then means a late start and inevitably another late finish and so it goes on.
This is why I'd like to be able to use something that will allow me to plan my routes and load them onto the Nav V well before I go away.
Now I'm retired and have more time I might I'll just go down the path I already use but try to roughly plan each day before I set off on the trip.
But I really would like to get to grips with Basecamp or an equivalent.

If you're not already on the Zumo users forum, then I'd suggest that you do as they have useful info on out wonderful, but at times intensely frustrating devices, and Basecamp, which can certainly be the latter!

sounds ghastly

I like to get to my destination before 5pm and rarely depart the following day before 930am. I like to have a bit of a wander and then watch people mill about whilst I enjoy a couple of beverages before dinner. Hence why I prefer to have pre-planned stops and stay in the same place for a few nights. It's a holiday, not an Iron Butt marathon.

You're right. I always set off with the best of intentions but tend to find stuff along the way that I wasn't aware of that piques my interest and turns a steady 6 hour day into a steady 9 - 10 hour day.
