Has anyone stayed at the Gasthof Hochalmspitze, near the Grosseglockner? It's got mixed reviews on Trip Advisor but looks like a great location. We are in that area of Austria in July.. JP

I have , nice friendly place:thumb2 made very welcome by the family that own and run it :beerjug:

It suited me and my wife perfectly.
If you book for 3 nights, i think, you will get a pass for the surrounding passes which quite a saving.
Loads of great roads nearby and John might even take you a guided tour if you convince Ros (wife/boss) that he must go.
Excellent food and drink and pleasant company.
I would not hesitate in returning.:beerjug::beerjug:

Have stayed there, will stay again, john & ros are nice people:beerjug:

Those bad reviews date from 2011: there have been many more since then and overall the Gasthof gets 4.5 out of 5, so I'm not sure why you would be concerned.

I think there's a thread here about the shenanigans with the people who negged John & his team on Tripadvisor. They came across as a ghastly bunch with unrealistic expectations of a family run Gasthof. I'm sure someone will drag up the link or you can search for yourself.

Anyway, it's a lovely area of Austria, close to Slovenia & N.Italy for some nice day trips with a different cultural experience. Just go...

I've been there and liked it.

It's not a luxury chain hotel so don't expect your bed turned down and a chocolate on the pillow.

Appreciate the warm welcome and informality.

Hi,

I first stayed there with Mrs Monty a couple of years ago and loved it. We were there again recently to do some skiing and will be heading back in July on the bike again as part of our summer bimble.

John and Ros are lovely people, nice traditional gasthof and a great area. Roads are superb, the local town of Gmund is charming. :)

Hotel Hochalmspitze

Thanks for the positive comments guys. It will be booked this evening..:beerjug:

Zell am See is a good spot local to the Grossglockner :thumb

As is Kaprun and not as busy :thumby:

Going back to your original question, look at the most recent reviews on Tripadvisor and decide whether or not the comments seem fair. Some people have unreasonable expectations and I've stopped in a lot of hotels with an average rating which have been excellent in reality.

If I stop in a Premier Inn type place, I don't expect 5 Star hotel facilities etc. If I stop in a B&B, I expect something comfortable, clean and homely, not a boutique hotel etc.

I too would like to thank folks for the kind comments, we are aware that what we offer will not suit everybody and always try to be open about our place. We are not 4 star and don't wan't to be. We offer a warm welcome,an informal atmosphere and comfortable accommodation.

I will be looking out for the booking then, we are in the UK until Thursday but can be contacted by Email, Facebook, this forum etc until then. We open for the summer season on 26th April so for the next few weeks we will be busy getting the place ready, putting my GS back together and checking out some new routes.

Bookings are well up on last year and we are looking forward to a busy and fun summer.

Cold beers (on the house) will as always be waiting for every biker staying with us.

John

I signed up at the NEC bike show for a few nights in July.

You really do have to read between the lines on trip advisor, we regularly visit Egypt and the standards there are different, some people have odd expectations and do not factor in type of Hotel or cost, we have seen some really nasty reviews of places that turned out to be great. Often the spelling and grammar of the reviews will give away if the people writing the review are on your wavelength innit.

Yet to find a truly awful Hotel on my Euro travels, all have been clean enough and reasonably comfy, some have been better value than others with some being well above what I expected for the money, but few have left me feeling ripped off and none have been unpleasant.

Trip advisor duly ignored.. Hotel Hochalmspitze booked for 6 July, we are going via, 2 Wheel Moorings, Pension Williams and The Hotel Weisseespitze in Kaunerthal. Hope to see any fellow GSers along the way.. John & Julie

When you get there, remember it's quite easy to get yourself lost, and you will NEED John to get his bike out and show you around..

( Any excuse will do) :D

Going a bit after you and coming back via Pension Williams and Two Wheel Moorings, may yet go via them too, but probably gonna wing it on the way down and stop when we feel like it.

The Hotel Weisseespitze mmmmhh also a VERY good place:thumb2
Have stayed there on a tour trip once, GOOD people !!
Also went back and stated on their camping site
I went in to book an evening meal for the wife,s birthday ,and when we went in to dinner that evening they had set us up a really nice table and put on a hand made birthday card !!
Good place:thumb2

I have to agree.. We went to the Weiseespitze last year and liked it so much we booked again! Great staff and facilities for us bikers. The owner, Charley, is a top man..

:thumb2 Just booked for 3 nights at Hochalmspitze for end of May, doing a quick reccy for a group trip next year. Fingers crossed for the weather...later in the year might make more sense but it's a detour en route to a planned trip to Croatia/ Italy (where late May should be ideal...I hope)...so had no flexibility. Can't wait now...
