Waiting for clutch slave cylinder replacement and want to keep an eye on gear box oil level; How I do that?!
:nenau

Remove the metal level plug in the side of the gearbox. The oil level is filled until it overflows from this hole.

The drain plug is under the gearbox. Leave that one alone.

The Plug on the side is NOT the oil level. The gearbox contains 0.8ltre of oil which does not come up to the plug. The plug is for filling the gearbox.

It is not really possible to check the gearbox level without draining and refilling with the correct quantity of your chosen oil.

Hmmm...
I'm told a gearbox seal has gone and the weeping from the slave cylinder is a symptom. Can the bike be used with this weeping, and for peace of mind, I'd like to check oil level in box. Mind you with 800mls in there, it would take a lot of weeping to empty it.
Any thing else I'm missing on this one?
cheers all.

I hate to interject but ............ from RepRom (5th Edition)

Gearbox oil capacity - to bottom edge of thread of filler screw - 0.9 lt.
Consumables/lubricants -Hypoid-gear lubricant SAE 90 API GL 5.

taken from the service data section.

Hi Steve E,
Why do you think that ?
Has someone told you this or have you read it somewhere ?

Like wilbjr21 I work from the RepRom and it says fill to the level plug.
I think there was a change to the casting that changed the capacity from something like 0.8 to 0.9 litres.

The final drive is as you describe but not the gearbox.

I was told the same by two Bmw dealers. The .8 ltre was a typo and should have been .9ltre.
Every time I have done an oil change I put in .9ltre and it does not come up to the bottom of the fill hole. In fact changed oil last week using 80/90 oil and it did not come up to fill hole.

Owned my 1200 for 5 years, done two gearbox oil changes in that time, drained and refilled until it overflowed from the level plug.

My bike is still working fine, shifts OK etc.

If you want to underfill your GS's gearbox thats fine by me.:nenau

According to RepROM 5th edition there was a change to a gearbox housing with a higher filler neck in Oct 2004:

This is what comes up for service info pre 2004:

And post 2004:

I've no idea what typos might be in the RepROM. I’m just trying to help anyone that might be confused about how to change their gearbox oil because of this thread.
