Well, great site this. It's already paid for itself this year. I just rejoined

Right, my gears arn't working properly due to salt damage. I've ridden the bike all week here and it's annoying me. I'm going to post some pictures and let you know how I get on.

I've got the necessary tools, wet'n'dry emery paper, silicone grease, and loctite 271.

If it's the gear lever pivot bush binding, (probably), I reemed mine out a touch and it hasn't played up since.

So, I tried to get the bolt out but my allen keys were too long and I had to take off the foot rest. Took it inside, made a cup of tea and cleaned out the whole thing. Couldn't believe the amount of crud in there.

Greased up everything using my newly acquired black silicone grease (thanks Paul). Then put everything back together.

Guess what! It worked. Hurray!

Please ignore the oil leak. I'm onto that, as soon as I figure out how to get cover off my oil pressure sensor!!!

Did I install the linkage upside down? Will it make a difference??

Right. Just got into work. It's sticking again. I can ride it but is there a chance it needs to be greased at the other end of the mechanism? Ie up, under and in behind the starter motor area?

Tips appreciated because I really thought I'd done everything as suggested.

Looking at your pictures it looks like you haven't removed the bush from the lever, all you've greased is the hole the bolt goes through - The bush is the convex/concave part that goes through the lever - it's that part that dries and sticks.

Your right. When I had it appart, I couldn't get the bushing out. It was stuck solid. I soaked it in wd40 for an hour and left it on top of the radiator. Still didn't come appart.

Answers my question though. Guess I'll be taking it appart again

Perhaps I'll post a pix of me with 'welded closed due to salt damage' gear shit, sorry Shift lever, in hand, on bike, with perfect Irish 'no salt damage' r850r lever installed. the r850 one is really springy

Right, I've figured out that the gear shift bushing is made of different metals. Not using the one from the r 85 'cos, well, the bushing is gone on that and it seems to have a lot of free play, so I ended up having to figure out how to get the bushing appart on the current one.

was given the end of a can something. Sprayed it on, waited a few minutes. Took it all apart, cleaned it and greased it. done. Works great.
