Gear Indicator Fault?

Gear indication problem

I have a 3 week old '08 GS and it has exhibited gear indication problems from day one. My gear indication goes blank. A gear change normally brings the display back. I don't know whether the route of the problem is the same as the ones above. Anyway, it goes for it's first service next week so the dealer is going to look into it for me.

If the source of the problem is anything different I will post it here when I have more info.

Cheers, Ken.

Same problem on the 1150???

Hello everyone!
My 1150 GSA has started doing the same - is it also bit of a weakness on the 1150's?? :nenau
I had a quick look at the weekend and found the switch - chuffing hard to get at. From the posts so far, I'll start with a liberal spraying of wd40 and work up to switch removal if necessary.
Cheers :thumb

Ha - my gear indicator started playing up last Thursday evening (how do machines always know when to go wrong just as everything is closed down for a Bank Holiday:nenau)

My 1200 GS is 1 & three quarter years old and has just done 16000 miles & Bahnstormer has sorted it today with a new switch :thumb2

Can you tell me were the plug is pelase?

Same symptoms on my GS1150 Adventure but I am not sure where the switch / plug is you are referring to is - any ideas please?

Thanks - but still not working

Thanks - I dropped the exhaust and unclipped the switch (a tight fit to get your hand up past the swingarm) it all looked OK and gave it a chance to dry out followed by a good squirt of WD40 - refitted and replaced the exhaust and crossed my fingers... still no joy so I guess a new switch might be in order?

Oh Well...

Well I had no luck at Motorrad in Bristol or Stroud - I have bought a new switch form James Shirlock by phone - should be here in a few days then I will try and refit to see if that cures the problem.

It's been a while since I posted the above message but I thought I would follow it up anyway:
Apparently they have moved the potentiometer to a drier location on the '08 bike for the reasons stated on this thread.

The dealer suggested a software reload which I was very sceptical about. Now I can't say with 100% confidence that the problem was software, however, the gear indication is now fixed.

Mine has started to misbehave, but my bike is now out of warranty.

When the gear positon is not being displayed the bike will only start with the clutch lever pulled in.

It has done this once before (after a lot of riding through fords!!!), and the dealer said the bike needed to be connected to the diagnostic computer to reset it.

Can someone post a diagram or photo of the switch location?

Is it easy to disconnect and clean etc... and is connection to the diagnostic computer necessary?

My gear potentiometer was replaced 3 weeks ago. Completed Clive's ride on Sunday, washed all of the mud off and now the gears have gone again.

Never had this problem with the 05GS

I guess that GSA's are not supposed to be washed :D
