Ok chaps I know I need EP (sae) 90 GL5 spec gear oil but what brands are you using these days?

I'd prefer to use a decent branded oil as not much is needed so I'd like to use top quality.

Suggestions please.

Thanks

I don't think Castrol do. Straight 90 weight GL5, just an 80-90.

I'll have another look at opie but at first glance I couldn't find anything other than Millers.

Use car gearbox oil. There are so many on there that you will get confused.
I have an 1150 and Opies suggested the following.

Silkolene BOA 80/90
Castrol Syntrex Long Life 75/90
Motul Gear 300 75/90

Used Halfords own for last 7 years, final drive bearing did fail at 80k but on the other hand gearbox is still all original after 105k :) IMHO more important to change regularly - I change both with engine oil and filter every 6k.

Castrol Syntrax Longlife 80/90. This replaced the SAF-XO which was a BMW spec oil. I know other stuff meets the spec but the gearchange ain't as good. Just about to pull my box apart now but it is an M94 with 103000 on the clock. Final drive never been touched :thumb2

I see castrol do a syntrax long life 75-90 but not an 80-90.

I presume it may be ok though, I was hoping to get a straight 90w GL5 from the likes of Castrol.

What do BMW use when servicing?

I used a GL4/5 once and not too long after that the gearbox got noisy. Drained to see and there were bits in the oil. New gearbox and only ever use Syntrax GL5 now. Bit dear but not as dear as a gearbox.

Personally I use Rock Oil 85/140 GL5 in all Gearboxes and Final Drives, it has considerably improved
the gear changes even better than they were before (all the Airhead boxes have been rebuilt and modified).

I get the oil in 5l from the local truck parts supplier without the bike oil premium added.

I bought 5 litres of Fuchs GL5 gear oil and changed it every 6,000 miles after having Scrimingers rebuild the FD at ~69,000 miles. Remember to keep an old gear oil bottle with tube, much easier to use and just refill it as required.
