Gear selector won't show neutral so bikes dead!

My 2008GS has joined in the failure race...

It's special is to have this problem only when trying to leave work.

My pre-weekend cure was to flip up side stand, engage clutch and chant obscenities at the bike - I think that's the magic cure - I'll have to try the technical one tomorrow.

Lack of neutral indication

Don't know how to post links to other threads, so will just say I had the same problem, which was answered on thread titled "2004 1200GS neutral indicator (or not)" if you want to search for that. Appeared to be the gear position indicator switch problem mentioned on this thread. For me, the biggest problems were 1) having to get hold of a torx spanner of the right size (off ebay for £6) and 2) the really awkward and restricted access to the switch, always assuming you don't want to remove the swinging arm first
It was weird - my gear position indicator switch was clean and dry inside (not filled with crap as some others described theirs that were playing up), but I cleaned it anyway, applied liberal doses of WD40 inside the switch & grease to the seal and refitted and haven't had an issue since
