Just got my bike back from service for a new shift lever bolt.
The lever had about 1cm of horizontal play on the splines (well seated on the splines not moving up and down and ruining them but it was sliding horizontally on the shaft).
The mechanic mentioned he had seen it before and knew exactly what it was when I brought it in.
The fix is a new bolt with an Allen head that replaces the external torx (socket required) stock bolt. The new bolt appears much stronger.
Build date on the bike is July 2009.
I posted this on the US forum, too.

Simple stuff.....................you should check all your bolts/fasteners as a matter of course, when you wash it or weekly

I have tightened my gear lever bolt up twice in 14500 miles, I had to buy a set of torque? spanners to do it. It is not unscrewing in the lever its stretching. Its only a matter of time before I tighten it and it snaps off.
You have just reminded me to replace it with a high tensile cap screw before I set of for my Euro Tour.

Mine came loose at about 6000m, I noticed the gearchange wasn't as good as usual. At the same time, a thread on here told me about the side stand bolt, so check that , mine was loose.

I didn't think to take a before and after shot. But I'll post a shot of the "after" version when I get a chance to drag myself away from the Mundial

Sorry, I simply don't believe you check all the nuts & bolts on your bike weekly. That's not 'simple stuff' that's OCD.

I docheck the bikes over weekly for stuff or when I wash it

Suprising what you can find to do:D

Johnny has one of those classic bikes that if unchecked can literally fall apart in the garage. I do like the nostalga of those 1150's though :D
