Just had the initial diagnosis.

Anyone know where I can get a cheap reconditioned gearbox. Motorworks are wanting £800 and the official BWM item is £1200! (Oh and labour will be £500 to £600 and none of the above includes the drive shaft if that needs replacing too.)

BTW, the bike is an '05 1200 with 44k on the clock.

I think I need to go away and cry... :(

Kai

ps Buy an extended warranty folks ... I wish I had !

pps Is it actually worth spending that amount on a 4+ year bike with that kind of mileage?

Sounds very bad :(

One though, can you pick up a salvage bike that's only got front end damage and do a cut and shut? Then flog off any excess parts on ebay to lessen the financial hit.

I doubt dumping the bike will work out cheaper than repairing it, even if you do factor in some sort of warranty afterwards.

wise words i recon, thats the way i would go

That sucks :(

But the bike is def worth way more than the 1400 required to fix it.

That's Shit. Why do you think the gearbox, final drive and driveshaft have all gone at the same time?

Try mailing this bloke he might be able to help out with the box. You can find him on ebid aswell.

When they come up on ebay they usually go for around £450.

There's a final drive on there at the minute. A bit rich for me though.

As for fitting it. It's not really a hard job to do. Get the reprom and have a look. If you've got the time (and maybe some help) you should be able to do the whole job in a weekend.

Have you tried speaking to BMW? I know it is well out of warranty but worth a go to see if they will make a contribution.

Worth a try but think the reaction will be......................................................

No idea but I think it has been on the way out for the past few months. I had a service done at the start of Sept (42k, did 2k since then) and mentioned that I was having some trouble with shifting up in that it would sometimes not engage or suffer false neutrals etc. After the service they said they couldn't find anything wrong. But the symptoms were still there. They did however comment that there was oil misting around the gearbox and that it might need (another!) seal replacing in the future. But not to worry for now as they'd keep an eye on it at the next service. :mmmm

The FD seal went last year and dumped a load of oil onto the back wheel - which was nice. :(

I did ask today if they were interested in buying the bike (or what's left) off me but they politely declined.

Will look at all of the options now and take my time. Just as well that it happened now rather than the spring.

Kai

So the only thing wrong with the final drive is actually only a duff seal??

Similarly the problem with the false neutrals in the gearbox may only be a worn part or two. Ok, you need someone who will take the job on but you may be looking at simple fix for not too much cost rather than replacement boxes? And why do you think shaft is suspect?? At only 44k miles it should be fine.

I have various spares, that would be needed to sort your bike but, are you sure you need them? have you checked the external linkage is not sticking and have you play in the rear drive or just need a seal
I look after several 05 1200 2 with over 70,000 on and they run fine just eat rear pads and corrosion on engine's

Rick / Mark

The diagnosis I have is from the dealer as they have the bike now. It most certainly is knackered (as I experienced when it went bang on me) and the box has gone as they had bits of metal in the oil when they drained it! The drive shaft is a 'suspect' for now rather than a definite.

Kai

I'd prob just take it on the chin and see if i could get a warranty on the new bits - what else can you do if you want to keep riding?

Plus it's not in a sellable condition is it?

Crap allthe same and feel youve been a bit unlucky :(

You never said there was a lot of metal in the oil,:(
They will just throw a new/s/h one in then as i daught they will strip and investigate the fault

:thumb2 What he said.

That still leaves you with a shaft that is probably fine and a final drive that is possibly OK but just needs a new seal. If you are lucky that may mean you are back on the road (with a second hand box) for say £1500 but with a bike that's now worth what? £5.5k? instead of scrap. At least that would give you a better starting point on any trade-in as you'd still be £4k in the clear?

Have you tried the dealer for goodwill. After all at the last service you mentioned that the gearbox was getting false neutrals and they told you they didn't think there was anything wrong.

2000 miles later gearbox blows up. Sounds like their test ride wasn't very thorough.

I'll be phoning them again today and will of course remind them about this. But I think I now need to resort to 'plan B' which does not entail the services of a BWM dealer!

Fit the second hand box, then take the old one to an engineer to get it fixed, then sell the reconditioned one for the same cost as the secondhand unit, all you have is the cost of the strip and rebuild plus any parts:nenau
