Evnin all,can anyone give me a possible cause of this problem.loss of drive to wheel in any gear, and a grinding bearing sort of noise when engine running, but the noise goes when the clutch is pulled in. got the bike ready to pull apart, but what should I be looking for, clutch, thrust bearing, gearbox. any help much appreciated

I'll ask the question that others will need answering before they can help:

What bike have you got (your profile says R110GS :nenau )?

When you say loss of drive, can you actually get it in gear?
How does the clutch feel (can you feel it working against the clutch springs)?

If the clutch is ok, it could be (hopefully not) gearbox input shaft splines.

I'm sure others will chip in.

Matt

Sounds a bit consistent with clutch center and/or gearbox input shaft splines, but others know more than me...

sorry, should of said, its a 95 1100.it feels like theres pressure on the clutch lever, & the gear indicator shows it changing through all gears.what happened was, travelling along motorway, felt, what seemed like 2 impact shocks, as though some thing had flicked up & hit the stand, pulled over(but still with drive) put it in neatral, to check, put it in gear to pull away,& no drive & this noise, with the started motor off, clutch looks fine, and whilst spinning the rear wheel, get a clonk, clonk, clonk, (stop me if i'm getting to technical)from the location of the gear box, I'm sort of hoping it's just me tyre needs air, but I susspect not:augie

This sounds like a Steptoe question - I'm sure that he (or one of the other guru's ) will be able to help you narrow down on the problem.

edit:
There ya go - a guru (Timolgra)!

If you still have all the gears it can be either the centre splines on the clutch plate/gearbox input shaft. Or the U/J or driveshaft.

Thanks all, shall be entering into the mystic void of the transmition with renewed vigour hoping i can stop before the box, will let you know. :bounce1

Faint hope I'm afraid.

If you're getting a grinding noise with the engine running and the gearbox in neutral its unlikely to be anything to do with the driveshaft :blast

We need pictures :thumb

(Best of luck with it).

.

He says - in neutral, turning the wheel by hand there's a clonking coming from the rear of the gearbox area. = Which could be U/J on the drive shaft. They can and do snap at the U/J.

Oh Woe is me,rear intermidiate shaft bearing gone big time, thanks for all the tips though, much appreciated, It just remains for me to say.......wait for it......ANY BODY GOT A GEAR BOX?:tears

got the box off, lots of swarf on drain down, had a look in, it's bad man! total collapse of bearing, cogs mullerd, casing, worn down & chipped. fink I need a nuva one:augie
