I had my gearbox stick in 3rd at the week end. I was not too p£ssed off as I was thinking about buying a longer 5th gear anyhow. It turned out that the linkage was Kaputt and so I've fixed it and am back on the road. I may well replace the g/box this winter anyhow. The question is, given my geographical location, has anyone out there have experience buying a recon g/box from any of the many suppliers out there? Who would you buy from?

I've bought several and to be honest it's a bit of a gamble. There's so many bodged ones about and a few unscrupulous rebuilders are fitting cheap chinese bearings that are not the correct spec.

I've got Sids (Crapauds) sitting on my bench at the minute. It's from a 95 PD classic but the main gearbox case is a 1978 item, the end cover is dated 1993 and there's a mismatch of components inside including a shagged layshaft. He bought the bike from Jersey where somebody had clearly bodged one gearbox together from the original and an early bike before quickly selling the bike on.

If you have any mechanical experience I'd learn to do it yourself. It's suprisingly easy and rewarding. You can buy the kit to do it for less than the cost of a reconditioned gearbox

Thanks Rob. I had been thinking about Seibenrock or Motoren-Israel exchange item as I never have any time to do something properly. I know you can buy the shim tool from M-I and I think I can get access to a hydraulic press to get the bearings on, so I may have to re programme the rebulid for the winter. The G/box is running fine now. (que instant geabox failure). I may change the valves this year as I have no idea when they were last done and I already have the timing chain to do. So it looks as if the enginge can come out and take it down to my "den" in the basement. Shame I can't get the bike down the stairs, the garage gets cold in winter!

Replacement or Recon Box

You could try Mat Beeker at BoxerToko who is not far from you see website link: www.bmwboxertoko.nl/ he speaks excellent English and always has coffee ready for any customers.

Just north of Venlo and east of Eindhoven

Thanks guys. I have replaced the linkage, changed the oil and shimmed up the gearchange lever. Everything is now fine and dandy. I will drop the oil again this w/e to see if we are making metal. If not then should be ok. Boxertoko is not that far from me. I priced up the spares/tools needed and I'll still be quids in (Euros in?) if I do it myself. For the moment though the gearbox is whining less than the bikes owner!!

Don't forget the output flange removal tool. I got mine from cycleworks (www.cycleworks.net) in the states. They also make a shimming plate that is better quality (flatter) than the Boxertoko one.

Rob, have you had any problems with the flange puller tool, is it robust enough for the job?
(Some flanges feel like they've been welded in place!).
I'm deciding whether to get an engineer to make one or send off for the one you've mentioned).
Could you post a photo of the tool, please, as there aren't any on the website?
Thanks.

Yes I had the welded tang break off but it works fine simply clamped into the vice. I've never bothered having it welded back together.

The weld on mine was very poor having very little penetration and failed on a gearbox that was particularly tight.
