Hi all.
8 weeks after taking ownership of a 2008 GS 1200 ...Gearbox gone.
31k and a full stealer service history.
Sourced a 2nd hand one from motowerks snd the good folk at Japandgerman in Bermondsey are doing the spannering but I'm still shocked. Anyone Else Had Such A Short Lived Gearbox. ...?

Nope, but it might be better posting this in the 1200 section .... I'll move it along for you.

Welcome BTW, hope you get sorted soon.

you did well i had a 2010 gsa that lunched its gearbox at 1100 miles!,shit happens i spose, that bike was x demo so i rejected it and got a brand new bike for a small consideration.i have had 3 more 1200 gsa since then and never had a problem worth mentioning since.

Hi. Not exactly certain the 4 act issue yet...mechanics will let me know. Given age etc. ..I'm not sure it's worth complaining to bmw
Previous owner was a lady who I actually know and it was clean and not twatted. .

Do you know what failed in the gearbox? e.g. a bearing or something more fundamental

Isn't bearing failure in a gearbox that leads to catastrophic damage and the need to find a replacement fundamental enough for you? :green gri

BTW. Sorry to hear of your woes Tubsyfatster, was the replacement box expensive?

Mine went a couple of years ago at 73,000miles. There were some quite spectacular noises when the selector arm disintergrated when I was changing into 6th at about 80mph.:augie

I paid £800 for a 4000 mile replacement from Sherlocks which was better than nearly £3000 (IIRC)) from BMW:eek: To be fair to BMW, they did say they would fit for free despite the mileage and it being 3 years out of warranty! I think teh only way ypu wpuld get anything out of BMW is if they fitted it for you.

Get one fitted and ride on as it's a very rare occurence.:thumb

I have a broken mainshaft that came out of a friend's '07 GS at 43K miles. Cheap, Eastern European, sealed bearings failed and allowed the shaft to flap up and down with calamitous results.

That's the sort of thing I was asking about.

I ordered a second hand one from motowerks with a 6 month warranty. £850....not sure what fitting costs will be yet...gonna get clutch gone too.
Watch this space. ......I'll be watching my bank account

Although. ..I did see one on ebay....250 notes. ...
Downside is it was in Lithuania. ...I suspect alongside parts of my stolen R1...

You wont have on after that lot. The bikes was built by project teams that clearly never emailed each other never mind actually talked. So its a complicated bitsa with all sorts of afterthoughts. Its no surprise the bikes are expensive and even less surprise they cost a fortune when major parts need replacing.
