Please see the attached video. I think its a gearbox bearing. No noise when clutch is engaged - yet horrible when clutch out? Its too deep I think for clutch actuators IMO. Any suggestion welcome before I have to strip down to investigate. thanks - Alex

Drain the oil and see what colour it is

A bit of background info may also help

What year, service history, what was the bike running like prior to the noise - is was hot engine - cold engine

was it in gear when you made the video?

And to echo - drain the gearbox oil and have an examine - then do the same for the engine oil

Thanks. 2004, 30k full service history. Engine running in neutral. Hot or cold similar noise. All ran beautifully, and still does bar this noise that suddenly started to occur about 40 miles ago (i.e the distance from home)

just listened to the racket on the video - that's the exact noise mine makes running in gear running on the centre stand - if you change to 6th and get to 40MPH its 5 times worse - yet on the road silent and smooth as anything and 20k miles on its exactly the same level of horror at it was.....

I had a mint 14k mile K1300GT, and the idea was clearly there, just less horrific

thanks. This noise is in neutral as disappears when the clutch is pulled in. I think its a shaft bearing, but obs wont know until its pulled apart. Your noise running in gear on the stand is normal - the shaft is over extended and is grinding against its end of angle.....

Further to my reply, this noise was there all the time when riding. As others have said, you should not run bike in gear while on centre stand.

I had similar noise on my 2008 GS. Turned out to be a shaft that has a sort of UJ in it. Item 1 in the photo. (i Think)View attachment 278725

only potential fly - 2008 got a later box ? in the picture that looks like some form of cush-drive #3 and #4 - rides up the cam against a spring #10 (the bit on the left), that maybe has broken.... hence it rattles like a good one - yet on the road under load it doesn't play up much.... umm... part 14 is a shim - of which there are loads of different sizes - so one bit gets a certain clearance so is that end float of this output shaft - OR - umm, there is no part 14 to set up the shaft on the later box, so maybe its to set up of spring preload?

earlier boxes L and N had rebuildable shaft

part # 03 Gear wheel - 1 - 23227693781 $230.20

part #04 Thrust adapter 1- 09/2005 - 23217693782 $114.10

part #10 Compression spring - 1 - 6,2X40,8X30 - 23007681394 $21.95

from 2008 boxes P R and S buy a whole shaft which was obviously great a they were still modifying this part after 2015

i only applies to Transmission code letters P+R+S Part #01 Drive Shaft 1 23008563018

That's the shaft, I remember now, a cam that rode up against the spring force. I know they fitted a whole new shaft,

Bike was a 2008 or 2009

What are you thinking? Don’t run the bike in gear on the centre stand, you’ll only do damage.

explaining why - would be useful - it should produce no harm at all - except BM in their utter incompetence have the UJ run a tight angle that's so bad when the suspension is fully extended it complains.... so let never ride on bumpy roads or off-rode then !

and if they made things last - maybe you wouldn't need to try and check how badly the engine management is mismanaging things, or check signals from ABS sensors with diagnostics attached

A hunter goes into the woods to hunt a bear. He carries his trusty 22-gauge rifle with him. After a while, he spots a very large bear, takes aim, and fires. When the smoke clears, the bear is gone. A moment later, the bear taps the hunter on the shoulder and says, “No one shoots at me and gets away with it. You have two choices: I can rip your throat out and eat you, or you can drop your trousers, bend over, and I’ll [insert appropriate colloquialism for sodomy here].” The hunter decides that anything is better than death, so he drops his trousers and bends over; and the bear does what he said he would do. After the bear has left, the hunter pulls up his trousers and staggers back into town. He’s pretty mad. He buys a much larger gun and returns to the forest. He sees the same bear, aims, and fires. When the smoke clears, the bear is gone. A moment later the bear taps the hunter on the shoulder and says, “You know what to do.” Afterward, the hunter pulls up his trousers, crawls back into town, and buys a bazooka. Now he’s really mad. He returns to the forest, sees the bear, aims, and fires. The force of the bazooka blast knocks him flat on his back. When the smoke clears, the bear is standing over him and says, “You ain't here for the hunting, are you?”
