Have just had a new gearbox replaced under warranty. Have now done 700+ miles and want to change the oil. Dealer recomends SAE 90 as anything lower could find its way through the oil seals and onto the clutch? Handbook says SAE 80/90.
I have access to Fully synthetic Mobilube SHC 75/90 LS.
So which should I use? :nenau

Regards.

I use SAE 90 in mine cos thats what the handbook says. My Land Rover now gets it because Im not keeping two type when the land rover doesnt really care as long as it gets it.

But I did go with the bike handbook, as I figured that the 1923 bike engine design was more refined than the land rover and should be treated a bit better, :D

Just make sure it's SL5 spec - a lot of gearoil multi-grades are only SL4

Where do you get the 1923 bit? Is it just because it is a horizontal twin? The model T Ford had a 4 cylindar in line engine, but it is nothing like the engine in a modern car, just as yours has nothing in common with the 1923 engine

You mustn't use GL5 in a an older box - it corrodes bronze phosper bushes, which all the older boxes have . So your logic is faulty :D

Madman,
Thats the thing about tongue in cheek comments when they are taken literally, the become out of context. I dont really think that the very first boxers had fuel injection or 4 valves per head. Bit of a clue there that my 1150 is a bit different. Nor do I really think that a 1923 engine is more sophisticated thatn a 300Tdi Land Rover engine, but hey, Im not bothered if I need to clarify statements.

Steptoe,
How early is early? Ive jst been and checked and you are right, i am using GL5 spec. The bike is a 2001 1150.
