Gearbox output seal from engineers merchant or BMW?

My 2008 GSA has popped its output seal.

Seems its a 25x40x7 seal.

Anyone used one from a merchant at £3 as opposed to the BMW £20 one that's probably the same thing in a BMW bag?

The other factor being that I can get one locally straight away whereas the dealer will probably give me that look of special order from Germany mate.

Am I missing something here?

No problems getting the job done but is the seal anything special?

If all else fails, look for a local bearing suppliers and call them tomorrow.

I have done this a few times for folks I gave up ordering the BM ones they were always non stock and had no problems with the ones from the bearing distributor

Just be sure to get one that is resistant to whatever gear oil you are using whether Mineral, Semi Synth or fully Synth just remember its always GL5 spec

Also be careful when you fit it that you get the depth the same if you go too far in there is a circlip on the back of the bearing that could tear the seal

All good Except one bike (and as it turns out my work was good!) I'd just assembled the gearbox after it eating the splines out of the clutch plate and damaging the input shaft So I rebuilt the box and I thought I had misinstalled the output seal as it leaked a week or so later. So I stripped it down cleaned it There looked to be nothing wrong with the seal but I replaced it anyway and the same a week later what had actually happened was the FD input seal had gone and the oil was splashing forward making it look like the new seal had gone

So the gearbox and FD oil level may be well worth checking in case it is that one that is gone?

Type R23 are double lip seals, nearly always best used on motorcycles.
The page shows normal nitrile seals, and there is also an SKF option, a higher quality of seal but with a premium price tag.

I've had my gearbox output seal leak a few times -each time i found the gearbox breather blocked.

Difficult to get at to clear, but might be worth checking.

I regularly clear the breather and not had the seal leak again for 30,000 miles.

When slipping seals over splines wrap the spline with a turn of PVC tape. This protects the seal lips and is easily pulled away when the seal is nicely in place.

Breather is clear, had a few funny looks as I managed to get my head into position to blow into the gearrbox filler hole... could hear the breather letting the pressure out so that's fine.

It's deffo that seal as there's an oily drip from the rubber boot and the oil level in the gearbox was down by 40ml so not much really.

New seal obtained from local bearing and seal company for.... wait for it..... £1.50p. BMW charge over 10 x that when they can get one in stock.

Weather too nice to strip it down so rode it instead. Will strip it down one evening. A fair bit of work to get it sorted but it's all good. It's lasted 60,000 miles + so can't complain too much.
