As Rob says, the pre81 boxes don't fit the post 81 bikes. An R100/7 is a late seventies bike.

You can get it to fit, but with more work than is needed on the box he already has.

hi all

quick message just need to check if you need to replace any bolts or crush washers etc. when I swop the gearbox thanks

Just the four 'stretch bolts' that secure the propshaft to the gearbox output flange.

I'll put four new ones in with the gearbox.

Your Dad is due to arrive in Edinburgh to collect the box from me on Wednesday 6th August. Then he's heading for France on his KTM :thumb

So far the plan is working :mmmm.

Bob.

Sean,

The gearbox is all ready for collection.

It feels a bit tight from cold but when I heated it with a gas torch it was running free. It'll be fine once its warmed up and bedded in.

(The rebuild I did on my 100GS box was the same, felt far too tight on the bench but it has been fine and after 500 miles or so is A-OK).

Is there anything else you need ?

We might have time to get parts from Motorworks / Moto-Bins et al before Wednesday - Clutch and throttle cables OK ?

no it sounds daft, but don't forget a can of gear oil:augie

When my 100/7 destroyed it's gearbox I used an 82 box as a doner. The input shaft is longer on the 100/7 so you will need to change that to allow the clutch to operate. you will also need to change the output end cover so that the correct length push rod can be used.

It's not quite as simple as simply swapping the input shafts because the 100/7 gearbox uses input gears with a 15° angle (17.5↑8) on the later gearboxes. The later gearbox also uses thicker gears. The only solution is to swap all the gearbox components over. Which ever way you do it the gearboxe need rebuilding.

Take Voyager up on his kind offer :thumb

Am I missing somthing here? Cause I have my Mono gearbox on my R100/7 outfit and the gearbox from that is fitted to the Mono (dont ask how all this came about). I did'nt have to change anything. It all snugged up nicely.
Safe riding Karl.

Maybe it's the difference betwwen heavy flywheel and light flywheel model's? where there's an issue?

Thanks, I had thought of that - and whether the mobile mechanic (his Dad) has the right tools.

But remember - all this is being strapped to the back of a KTM.

I am assuming that EP90 is available in France :nenau

Karl,

It is the difference between the heavy and light flywheel bikes. 81. Your 100/7 is one of the 81 to 84 bikes.

Did you damage any teeth?

The layshaft took a dive. I swapped the contents of the 82 box with the earlier one. The original input shaft had to be retained though, it's a different length to the later one. The end covers and push rods are different as well so have to go with the appropriate bike.

Well, my spare box is hopefully on its way to France.

Sean's Dad got a flight from Canada to Amsterdam, then one to Glasgow, then a 'bus to Edinburgh.

I met him at around 13:00 and took him back to my place for some food and a quick peruse of my 100GS (to see what has to be done). Then I drove him to the wilds to the north of Dumfries with the gearbox and some tools.

When I left at around 16:15, he was talking about being in Portsmouth for the ferry at 23:00

The KTM 990 Adventure must be faster than I thought :augie

No doubt we'll hear how he got on.

(I just hope that gearbox is OK after all that :mmmm )

Tomorrow I must start preparing for the Skye Camping Weekend :clap
