Helloo,

My G/S is becoming increasingly difficult to change gear - selector mech is beginning to feel notchy and I am getting baulked reasonably often and missing gears etc. I suspect general wear and tear on the cam plates and rollers etc, apparently the box has been rebuilt before approx 30k ago (my guess is the plates weren't touched), but I suspect it might need another look. At the same time I would probably fit the higher 5th gear and roller bearing mod to the selector mech.

Question is - being based in the poofty south of the country (South London at the mo, very soon to be the Isle of Wight), who would be best to do this for me? Im Ok in removing the box and sending it somewhere (or if near enough taking it myself) but some pointers to a suitable gearbox Guru would be very welcome!

Cheers all

Thanks chaps.

Did a bit of clutch adjusting, which has made a slight difference, also, as I have some, I will drop and change the oil before I get drastic and rip it out. Some days its fine and then for some reason it becomes a bit of a pig and you miss a gear every 10th change and then the following sequence of gears up or down the box baulk (like yesterday). Then the following day seems ok again. Weird!

If your oil is (relatively) clear and you decide to just replace I have had excellent results with BP Limsip 90 limited slip gear oil.

It is a high quality GL 5/6 extreme pressure gear oil, and is well suited to BMW's angle cut gears, particularly in you like to bumble around slowly in top gear.
And as a bonus I found a noticeable improvement in the gear change quality too, and I was using Mobil M1 full synth previously.

Interesting, thank you. I did a bit of googling and found that BP Limslip 90 has now been renamed as Castrol Axle Z limited slip 90, (at least in thr UK anyway) and I may well give it a go when I next make a purchase. At the moment I already have a quantity of Castrol axle EPX 80/90 so will use that up -I dont know for sure what is in there at the moment so want to establish some baselines.

I was out yesterday and it was fine, not a single missed gear, no baulking, all sweetness and light. :nenau

we shall see what today brings!

Just in case but not trying to teach Granny to suck eggs

Remember GL5 spec You can use whatever viscosity tickles your fancy (and that's another oil thread started :blast ) but you need GL5 to protect the gear teeth

Gl 5 or better, and 6 is better than 5, but I should have said hypoid oil , which is needed for the hypoid gears . And because the box is all indirect, you need the best oil you can get.

I wondered why my local servo was remaindering the stuff at $2- a liter, but as I had been paying $18- for M1 synth when I could find it, I thought I would give it a try, and was pleasantly surprised.

Nice to know BP, or Scottish Oils as I knew them, make some of the Castrol oils, I read somewhere they make at least the base stock for quite a few expensive Synths too, including Mobil One.

Thanks guys. While im at it I shall do the final drive/shaft - from memory I recollect that same oil is good for the whole drivetrain?

Castrol differential oil is gl5 and obviously has the shear strength to cope with the helical gears. It's the same price as gearbox oil.
