Gearbox rebuild?

Can the R1100GS gearboxes be rebuilt by a competent home mechanic IE any special tools needed?

I have SEARCHED the forum and lot of comments on the 1100 box and how even reconditioned boxes can and do fail quickly...this seems to mainly apply to the early 1100 box though?. Mine is a 98 bike so would presume it has the later (better?) box to start with. So can I do anything with it?

It's the '95-96 gearboxes. They have almost constant failures mostly coz of noise supperssing bearings but there are some other causes too, bloke i know just replaced his (with the M97 of course).

Better eBay out a nice decent M97 ('97-'99 models, R, RT, RS, GS, but NOT S!) gearbox. Lasts forever compared to the '95-96 ('94 has it's faults too, thus the M97 is the best for 1100/850 models)

I didn't have a problem with it, I read all the horror stories about the 1100 box and new they were...so called notchy (sp?) Having ridden it to work more than a few times now I do find 1st, 2nd and especially 3rd more than a little notchy. You feel third skipping over the teeth before it will go in which is probably the biggest worry if anything. The other two gears are sweet 80% of the time. Its not jumping out of any gears either.

I am the first to admit that the bike is new to me, but I have tried most combinations and techniques for using the beemer box smoothly..but to no avail. The final straw was several comments from guys at work on how they could hear the clunk/clack of the gear change over the sound of the Remus exhaust , one particular instance I was giving it the beans too and thought it was one of my smoother changes . Its probably got years life in it yet, but providing it does not require radical tooling then I am sure if I can keep aircraft in the air then a gearbox shouldn't be to many probs...although there was that one helicopter that fell out the sky with my name on it

Finally any clues as to where I might find the gearbox number (ie M97) I have had a quick look but its just a little $hitty ATM and can't see anything.

No I wouldn't know where that number was and I'm suprised I always thought the box was perfect, typically clunky but fine.

Maybe, Maybe not.

I was just trying to get an idea on rebuilding the box as per the original question.
