Finally found a decent gearbox at the right price for my GS. So last weekend it only took 1,5 days to get the old one out and the new one in.
Every possible thing that could go wrong did i.e. the splines would not line up, the pressure plate guide spring undid itself while putting the lot back so had to strip the clutch off as well. The shaft dropped out of the bevel drive and eventually took the whole lot appart to get it back on the bike again.
My subframe took a bit of a knock as it would not line up properly again, suppose the cage who knocked me over a couple of weeks ago did more damage than I thought.

Alas by Sunday 13:00 we got the bike fired up again and moving forward. I have fitted a R1100R gearbox which according to sources is better than the GS box ( I can't back that up yet).

Now however since having the tank and bits off my carbs/injectors seems to be out by a fair amount and also running the Lazer can. Tried the Hayns manual last night on setting the throttle cables - BIG MISTAKE!!! Now all has gone to shite and eventually got the bike to at least run again but very lumpy.

My thoughts now is to fit my original std can and cat back and get rid of the Lazer(Losing about 30 miles per tank of fuel). Then reset the whole bloody lot from start and try and get it to run smoothly again. At the moment I can't dare to run the bike at 2000 rpm as it is easier to stay on a bull at a rodeo than on this bike!

Any tips on how to set the carbs from scratch idiot proof? How are you suppose to measure 5mm of play in the throttle cables and where do you measure it? The balancing of the carbs did not make much difference as I suspect one of the cables are pulling more than it should and the rest probably not.

The last thing I need to check is the fact that my neutral light now stays on through all the gears, ohh boy this is going to be interesting....

Cheers

maverick - i can't help you technically i'm afraid, but my thoughts are with you! your description sounds exactly like what happens to me whenever i go anywhere near my bike with a spanner!

so good luck anyway.

PS. maybe mobitech could help out?

May sound simple but make sure the cables are located properly on the throttle valve pulleys as this makes the bike run like a bag of poo!
I know as i spent ages trying to get mine to run right and in the end noticed the cable was not seated properly. When i put it in it ran properly again.

Maverick are you going to the doggets meet on the 12th on your bike, if so i can pop along with my guages and set it up for you. let me know ;

Yeah mate will be there from 18:00 onwards or even a bit earlier.

same sort of trouble when I changed my gearbox - the poorly seated cable is a good bet and check the cross over cable is not trapped under the battery carrier, also, after disconnecting the battery you should reset the throttle sensor by opening the throttle right to the stop twice before starting the engine.
The shaft always comes apart, its easier to reassemble that way, especially if you keep the swinging arm level rather than pointing down sususpended from the shock absorber - i think the dimensions are shorter that way and it makes it easier to mate the shafts together. The sub frame is always a fiddle to re align.
You have just got to keep grafting away at it.
Best of luck
