Bollox.

Riding home last night. overtaking a landrover, suddenly drive goes. Awful bloody whining from gearbox and no drive in any gear. Pulled to side of road, and although there wasn't enough grunt to drive the bike properly, the back wheel was still turning. In neutral the wheel turned quietly, but in every gear loads of grinding, crunching and knocking noises. The RID tells me the gears are selecting but they're not, and the noise is appalling. Oh hell, I think that's the end of the gearbox. Which is also probably the end of the bike, as it's a 2000 R850GS with 99,000 on the clock.

Anyone want to buy a tatty 850 with a bust gearbox?

If everything else is OK on the bike why not get it done. At least you know it should be good for best part of another 100K.
I had my 1100 gearbox replaced, along with the clutch at 86K. It is now on 104K and I haven`t regretted the massive bill!

Scriminger (spelling?) Steve is your man he will build a stonking gearbox, but there is always a bit of a backlog as he is in demand. :comfort

As JB suggested. Sounds like the clutch friction splines have worn.
You won't know if the gearbox input shaft splines have also worn until you remove the gearbox.
Sometimes they're worn, sometimes they're fine.

Thanks chaps. Have spoken to a trusted (to me) independent who has said he can do it. Just about financially viable, and I do like the bike, so I think I'll follow the collective advice and get the old beast fixed.

Don't forget that you might be 'lucky', as Neil (Steptoe) said, & it could just be a buggered clutch plate. It's not unknown for the centres to break free or for the splines on them to wear out & leave the gearbox splines ok...

Collective fingers crossed for you...:thumb

Thanks Paul

Things are looking up a bit. I've got my 1994 CB500 running, so at least I'm mobile again (it'll feel a bit odd after the GS, but it's better than public transport). Bloke next door says he can borrow big van from work to get it to BGM to be fixed. Bike would be needing a clutch soon anyway, as the current one has had a hard life hacking through London. So I'll have the old beast fixed.:thumby:

Oh, and when it went last night, I was at least right outside a country pup, so at least I was able to have a couple of pints as I waited for the recovery truck. Thought I might as well, it wasn't as if I was going to be riding anywhere......
