Spent the last 6 days in the mountains and hills of the Vercors region in France - lots of 180° bends with 1:5 gradients requiring countless 3-2-1, 1-2-3 gearshifts - box is at least as good as my twin-cam was doing the same thing last year.

Lucky sod , I did the alps and Dolomites in June , my gearbox was shite , now at the dealers being looked at as I won't ride it due to the awful changes 1-2-3-4
The first 2000 miles the box was perfect , the next 2900 miles on the June trip was as above crap. Nothing like my Old twin cam 2011 .

I was reflecting on my way in to work - how good my TC's gearbox is. I hope BMW get the new box sorted out and is not one step forward two steps back :blagblah

Yikes. My first service done and the bike is peachy. About to shoot off for a 2,500 scoot around the Alps and southern France. I hope my experience isn;t the same as yours.

Either way, hope you get yours sorted.

How much do BM pay you for all these pro posts,

I could supplement my pension writing shite. :ronno

For Christ's sake! Is it a forum rule that you are only allowed to post negative views about a BMW product. Just accept that Engineer (and a lot of others) have no problems with their clutch/gearbox and are happy with it. Likewise, there are others who are having problems (but then they get the knife stuck in them for being cack-handed and unable to change gear properly!).

Myself, I am already on record as being disappointed with the gear change quality. But it has improved (for me) as the kilometres have been added. I am happy to read about others experiences, both +ve and -ve.

Yes, as it has been said before, posters should toughen up and accept -ve comment. But why is there a seemingly growing need towards personal attacks on this site at the moment?

Re "Gearbox"
To be honest about my LC, I found that when in the Alps and Dolomites this year, I could get excellent smooth changes when using revs an throttle as you would in everyday type use( and still do).
But, on some of these hairpins and short stretches between them, when short shifting the gearbox could be like a bag of spanners dropped on the floor. I always gave the box the benefit of doubt and put it down to the harsh usage, most of the time it is as good as you could wish(except when selecting 1st of course)

Beats me Mate, :blast I'm happy with mine, 6,000 miles and counting, best BMW I've ever owned :thumby:

Just feel sorry for the very few who are having problems :blast

A solution for bad Gearbox ???

I think those with good gearboxes should ride one of the bad box bikes and then we can determine if it is the rider or the box ! If the rider with a good box reports that the bike with the "bad" box performs well for him then we have found the solution to the bad box problem.

Above 5k rpms my LC's box significantly underperforms my ex TC. At lower rpms I can live with it . The higher the revs the worser it gets.

What's a good box !

As some owners may no even no there box is as rough as dog sh1t as they presume its typical of the brand ..

I've been on the site 9 years and admittedly not been a heavy poster , but after duly paying my subs on getting a new WC after a few years away I gotta say I'm pretty disappointed by the mass of overall negative comments I see on the forum and probably won't pay up again next year.

Sure, I can go somewhere else if I'm not man enough to take it, I mean suck it up Princess, right? No. This isn't a nice social place to hang around any more. I used to love the the camaraderie but for some reason it's degenerated to a personal slanging match where crapping on people from a great height seems acceptable. I hate to say it, but I'll probably vote with my feet and go elsewhere. Stunned how many people want to put down others or mock them when something they've invested hard earnt shackles in has problems.

Rant over.

I agree, it is a shame, and I think that quite a few will go the same way.:rob We've already had a few new members disappear after only a few months.:blast

You'd expect that people would be more interested in riding their bikes rather than spending all day on here, given the time of year, but obviously not.:blast

Don't worry about mate, I have been a member for 8 years and in that time had 05 + 07 1200GS an 09 + 60 + 62 plate K1300R and am now the owner of a 13 plate 1200GS LC. These bikes have all been a big investment for me as I don't earn mega money but I have loved them all:clap

My new GS doesn't have the best gearbox but I have faith it will be sorted and am glad I got the bike as it is GREAT:cool:

I think a lot of the negative comments on here have come from bored men who just want to stir up trouble most of who do not own the LC:mad:

I stayed a member of the site in the years I had away from a GS as I knew I would be back and also I find it the best site to get a vast amount of knowledge from on touring etc. There are some great people on here so don't let the few (why does that sound familiar) spoil it for you/us:eek:

Today whilst belting through Lincolnshire, I was just thinking how great my silky smooth gearbox is......I don't see a problem!

Yes there's a few on here that seem to think as I work for BMW I shouldn't have an opinion regarding my LC and in stead of replying to the issue rant on about who I work for, by the way they don't know what area or department I work in they just assume I should know everything and accept high prices because im an employee, well its still hard earned money whoever you work for, I choose to buy BMW through loyalty to the brand I work for, even with the discount ive pushed my self to the limit to buy this machine. So for things to be not quite right is a double wammy as I believe and trust the BMW brand.

Anyway on to the subject my GS has covered 4700 miles and was absolutely fine apart from the clonk in to first which I accept is normal on some bikes. However I am now having issues of clonking into gears at up changes now and then, basically one day its fine another its not good and in fact pretty disheartening, Yes I work for BMW and yes my gear box is not great ooh how dare me complain.
I shall ask my local dealer what he knows of this issue if anything, and will ask my contact at BMW headquarters if he can shed any light on the subject.

hopefully there will be a fix for it soon and it will be sorted, apart from the notchy / noisy changes I love the bike. Ive also been riding bikes for 32 years racing bikes for 6 of those years so know a good gearbox.

Like quite a few people on here they love the bike but would expect the gear box to be better than it is.

Not gearbox

:blagblah I have not got a LC and indeed I have not gone for a test ride because even though I would like one I would have to sell my twin-cam which is an excellent bit of kit. The cost to change would not be affordable.
However, I felt the need to post something about some of the utter rubbish and insults which are thrown at some people for daring to complain about a potentially dodgy gearbox.
I have got a sense of humour and don't mind a bit of ribbing but some of the comments are just nasty!
My main point however, is that I look at the posts maybe two or three times a week and only seldom do I post myself. I have noticed that familiar names crop up on a regular basis and seem to appear in almost every thread with negative comments in the main, some of them hurtful and extremely personal. I get the impression that they have nothing better to do and I wonder what sort of narrow lives they lead when they appear to be on here almost constantly.
There are others that appear on a regular basis too but don't normally trash other's posts, people like Nutty who is obviously a gs lover and his posts usually are light hearted and to the point.
Anyway, wanting to say this for quite a while:mad:

My LC has an awesome gearbox. I have no problems with it. Yes it clunks into 1st, as did my previous Hondas. I'd love to ride a LC whose owner reckons has a duff box.

well said

I am new to BMW motorcycle ownership but have had/ BMW cars silly not to really as I work for them and get a discount.
my point is ive been a member of forums for all my bikes Yamaha, Triumph and Harley to name a few all of which proved valuable for tips info and issue resolution, to date this forum is the worse for all the reasons you have stated above, light hearted banter is fine but there comes a point that some remarks are out of order and unacceptable.
All it will do is drive people away.
