I know a lot has been said on these forum about gearchange snags on the 1150, but I wanted to pick peoples brains again.

I have been having problems changing down recently, and stripped down, cleaned and lubricated the linkage. I noticed that on upchanges the gear lever springs back to a neutral position, but on downchanges it doesn't. If I physically lift the lever to its normal position first, the change works fine. Does anyone know if there is some kind of return spring that should pull the lever back up to the normal position.

I'm loath to pay my local dealer £600ish just to strip down the gearbox and examine it if all it is is a case of lift the lever prior to changing down.

I think most dealers have a fix for this which involves removing the mechanism from the splined shaft and lubricating the bush behind it (where it goes into the 'box). Easy DIY job.

Check the actual pivot of the gear lever prone to seizing and gives the syptoms you describe.

gear change

Hi Iain

Yes loads of info on here, same happened to me a short while ago, and kept removing and greasing the 'rose joint' linkages, but if you removed the whole gear lever, (via the countersunk bolt) attached to the footrest plate, you should be able to see a nylon type of bushing.

Gently tap the gear lever through and out of this bush, what i had to do was remove a small ammount from the inside of the bush with a fine file. re grease and push the gear lever back in.

You should now be able to spin this around very easily, (it was fairly tight and sticky when first removed).

Re fit and hey presto been ok since. :D

Cheers Paul

Thanks for the help guys - I couldn't actually get the gear lever screw undone (seems to be a 5.5mm Allen key, and the toolkit doesn't have one of those), but was able to clean and lubricate the pivot, and then exercise it a bit.

I've just got back from a test ride and was able to use my usual agricultural gearchange style with no problems - I guess this shows that it is unlikely to be anything major internal, so will just carry some WD40 as a get-you-home lubricant.
