I got the above oil seal from Motor Works for an '82 5-speed box and noticed just before installing it that the hole was a lot smaller than the original one. The numbers on the side were 26 15 7 and on the old one 26 16 7 meaning outside diameter/shaft size/thickness respectively. The shaft is in fact 16mm. I called Motor Works and they seemed surprised and have reordered some of the correct size, which according to BMW should be 26 16 7 like the old one.
Was it really a mistake, or do people fit the smaller hole version now?
UPDATE. I've just been back to the garage to check my facts before hitting "Submit" and I found that the bearing in the gearbox wall through which the gearchange shaft passes is in fact spherical, I mean it's just like a ball with a hole through it for the shaft. This allows some measure of misalignment for the shaft, so I'm wondering if the 15mm hole version is deliberate after all? If so I'll call Motor Works again to save them the bother.
Does anyone know?
