I thought the gearchange felt a bit stiff, so decided to strip and clean the linkage/balljoints. But.....I can't get the wire clip things off, item 1 in the pic, one at each end of the shaft. Is there a knack? Do I use the straight bit to lever the circular bit off? Is the end of it hooked into a hole I can't see? - I can't get a good view of it. It feels like I'm going to knacker it if I apply more force, which I don't want to do without a replacement to hand.

the long bit goes down through 2 small holes in the cup, pull the round bit outwards and pull the long bit free, your problem though is where the shaft goes through the frame, it will be full of shit and partially seized
