Greetings wise men, and ladies, of the UKGSer,
I bought a 19 amp/h gel battery from BMW HQ in Huttenstr. Berlin for my R 80 GS Basic Kalahari on my way east last september. It has performed perfectly since then, but was dead morning 13 oct '09. That is 20,299 km ago, which could mean that there is no abnormalities with the charging current, otherwise it would have failed earlier.
The battery is made by Exide, and should normally last a many years. I measure 6.35 v over the poles, which indicates that two, or more, cells are defunct.
BMW suggest, not unreasonably, that I present the bike, and battery, for inspection in Berlin, to which I replied that I could have it inspected in Norway. So far they have not replied.
So, does anyone have any similar experience, and did your customer complaint win through. I bought this battery to have the best available, and have ended up with 5.8 kg of bio-hazardous waste.
Ride safe,
Pete, in Oslo
