Getting to grips with my el cheapo Street Pilot 111 :thumb

The only disappointment is I am going to have to wait until I return to the UK before getting the best out of it.

I did read somewhere that there are programs about where you can scan your own map in and after aligning it up with known coordinates upload it to the GPS unit.

Can any one enlighten me on this. Is it easy to do and what sort of results can I expect.

The knowledge of the collective will be most appreciated.

Regards

Could be wrong but I believe Blowzorn on this site does.

Search for GPSmapper and GPSedit

Yes, you can do it.
It is not just scanning and calibrating an image. You have to draw literally every line. Expect to spend hundreds of hours on even small areas of mapping.

Blowzorn just takes a picture of a detailed map and downloads it to his GPS. Then he just calibrates it to a know reference.

PM him, he'll tell you in more detail :thumb

Ive noticed with my SP III that the older V5 software takes up a lot less space than the newer V8. I can get a full european tour on one 128mb card with V5 where I need two for V8. V8 has much bigger map areas so you get a lot of unwanted area

NO, this is not possible

A large amount of preprocessing is required.

Not from what Blowzorn told us. He might see this and comment hopefully :)

Yes Blowzorn does his own maps but it's for a PDA only.

I am working through the link that Fanum has posted and will let you know how I get on.

Cheers all
