It was raining here today and rather than do anything constructive I thought I would turn Flintlock's excellent thread on ABR
Northern Ireland..Places to stop, take in the views.

Into a GPX file.

Then I thought picnic tables and picnic areas are usually in lovely spots with a bit of a view so why not create a GPX /POI of all of the picnic spots in Northern Ireland/Ireland and since many of us are men of a certain age why not public loos as well. Had a good look online and there is no "off the shelf" data so to speak so thought those features are marked on Open street maps there must be a way of getting to the data. Now in my dim and distant past working life I had to mess about with Arc GIS and new that there was a freebie bit of software that provided similar functionality QGIS. So I loaded it up and did a bit of reading and a bit later I was able to produce this map of Loos and Picnic sites ( I intend to merge attribute tables later so that I can identify sites that have both).

For verification I checked a few sites that I know well. The site below has Tables and Loos and is correct.

The Vector layers above are produced using this dialog (which is a plugin)

And they can then be exported using this dialog. Oddly the GPX file produced can't be read directly by basecamp (because garmin :D) but can by MRA and I know there is a way of manipulating the underlying XML to get it to work but instead I imported it into google my maps then Basecamp as a KML and it was fine.

This is Loos imported as a temp gpx file with the waypoint Icon changed to loos and renamed public toilet "N" (IN EXCEL). This could be converted to a POI file by Garmin POI loader (Windows only I'm afraid). You could even associate your own proximity warning for them say within 1/2 a mile. There is some data missing from OSM but its probably the best source of reasonably up to date POI's we have. So for those looking for POI data its all there in Open Street Maps.

Excellent tutorials here on Garmin's POI implementation and how to get the best out of it.
