2008 GS 6k miles, bt20 front , bt21 rear both new. Computer showed 2.1bar front 2.4 bar rear. I weight 16 St had 2*laptops + clothes in top box and both panniers light clothes. ESA set on comfort + one suitcase.

At 90 the bars start a gentle wobble enough to make me instantly close throttle. At 80 - 85 it's fine . I have gone faster and nothing happened and under acceleration it's fine.

I made sure I was gripping very lightly and tried sport and norm setting with same results. Basically losing confidence and going to chop it in if I can't feel stable at speed.

Any advice , things I could try?

Regards
chris

Is it the same without the top box?

I had the same issue with my top box so ditched it a while back. Never had a problem since:thumb

Mine does that 06 GS.Is livable with once you have had it once go a bit faster and it goes.Go a bit faster still and it comes back a bit worse,LOL bad enough to scare the car you are passing in the middle lane into the first lane:eekGets much worse with knobblies on:D

I'll give it a try next week and just use the side panniers.

Many thanks
chris

I get the wobble too. I thought it was just me not using it right.

Not tried without topbox but it occurs with both panniers on and off.

Happened on my 1200 and my current ADV.

I'd suggest that your tyre pressures are too low. 36 / 42 F/R is much better. That's 2.5 / 2.9 in new money.

2.5/2.9 here on tourances, top box. no wobble that i've ever noticed.

i havnt got a 12 but isnt the comfort setting for lower speeds???

+1 here.... topbox 99% to blame... you said 2 laptops in it? Thats 2 laptops too much mat...

Topbox is not to be loaded heavy - says so in the instructions.. Should only use it for easy access while travelling, or your papers, light clothing waterproofs etc...

Secondly, its so bouncy up there, that the laptops will sufffer too...

Had it with a Triumph Tiger 955i. No panners, no weave at any speed. Panniers on, even empty, gentle weave about 90 ish. Different bike I know, but just to illustrate that aerodynamics, weight, load distribution etc all make a difference. Try some combinations as suggested above before you lose faith completely. :thumb2

Thank you for the advice. I'll try top box and tyre pressures. Can anybody else confirm if comfort setting is only for low speeds. Thanks again for everybodies comments

thanks
chris

Haven't got a clue , handbook at home I'm away hence using tinternet.
Cheers

Yes I got the same gentle wobble at about 90 ish when loaded with panniers top box and tent. All very controlled and all that but disconcerting none the less, have not tried to recreate without a load as yet.

Did this happen before the new tyres?
Maybe the new ones hav'nt been balanced correctly.

Apart from mechanical problems, hi speed wobbles/weave are normally induced by vorticies caused by poor air flow around the bike/rider. They can simply be caused by a flapping jacket or be quite complex... Different "size" riders can cause the phenomenon... Shoichiro Irimajiri said that testing on the early Honda CBX was done by Japanese riders of small frame. He commented that the size of the American rider posed a problem that their design team hadn't recognised... ( be nice now....;) )

Tyres and pressure are a big factor, I had tourances on, all fine, put conti trail attack on and get death weave between 88 and 98, goes away at greater speed. Changed now to pilot road front, pilot road 2 rear, no weave! What tyres are you on now? How worn are they?

I assume that BT20 and BT21 are referring to the tyres, 020 and 021.

I was going to change my worn out 020's for 021's only to have the tire chap so he had had lots of issue with GS riders on the 021's. Why have you mixed tyres never a good idea

So still on 020's
