So Howard, it that the only basis on which you critisise modern BMWs - a 1991 GS?

Yeh! One was enough for me.
Oh, don't forget all the postings like "my rear bevel has fallen apart" etc. etc. They might be reinforcing my opinion. Post like this :-

asked for replacement bike ...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

my gs ran well for 8000 miles i love it but it mustnt love me
it developed a dangerouse fault shorltly after a gear box read clutch seal repair
the throttle kept coming on of its own accord you could just be sitting on the bike at tickover and without warning start reving to 5thou and back without touching the throttle culminating in trying to put me accross adual carriagway whilst waiting for a safe gap
another symtom was overheating header pipes read fluresent orange
failurer to start not that i was bothered by then
bmw assist back to dealer 200 mile from home this of course happend when taking an advanced test at the driving standard agency in bedford
at least ive got credable winesses
dealer identified a defect on the throttle bodies and went on to replace all to do with the throttle controls kept the bike ranit arround 300 mile
pronounced it fixed and returned it to my door the week after

one trip to matlock bath no problems 200miles happy days are here again
so off to not so sunny yorkshire bimbling along the hawes road when i happened upon a landrover up front ..resrticted view so close the throttle
but... yes the bike keeps driving me forward i decide to overtake the landrover open the thottle and ....nothing no power no increased forward motion ..so panick hard on the brakes and pull in ..bike then stops ..re boot the computer ignition thing bikes ok get to haws have dinner
ring dealer because the bike now wont start
get jumped and like a fool tell dealer im bringing it in for
the problem to be re invstigated ..yes i know i shouldnt have but you get pissed off bieng stranded from home every 2nd trip out
ride bike 90 or so miles fine
1 mile from dealer filtering on outside of traffic light que ..lights turn green ..lovely open the throttle and me no engine response no brakes only what you call residual all the cars i was overtaking are now undertaking me betweeme and th opposing traffic..have to wait for opposing traffic to clear and drift to the opposite kerb
dealers computer showed three faults but all now rectified in other words nothing wrong ...but there is isnt there
wife wont now use the bike and as we tour ive had it
i couldnt sell it to anyone even somone i didnt like so there it is
any surging of revs on your machine is a symptom beware
yours sadly steven

The finish on my Triumph is very good and I visit a lot of Triumph forums and don't see anywhere near the amount of corrosion and reliability issues as appear on this forum related to the newer BMWs.
Hope that clears things up for you.

Ah, you obviously visit the ones where the site owners bar posting from people who are "negative" about Triumphs then :D

Would this be an example of the fine finish on a modern Triumph Howard?? ;)

Now I can see why the Triumphs cost less than the BMWs, they still use an out-of-date, (for road bikes), form of drive for the rear wheel.
I would expect that Howard's bike is lubricated with special clean lube that never flies off and dirties his immaculate, rust-free cycle parts.
I do remember road bikes with chains, my CZ 125 had one!

Oh, and there's me thinking all this time that you are an expert on BMWs :bow :bow

SAD

Jay, you know what you now must do.
Write a list of every vehicle that you have owned that has failed to live up to your expectations.
Search on the internet for each make's owners group and then spend the rest of your life writing negative comments about their chosen vehicles.
Howard will be pleased to help with suggestions.

Iv'e had various jap bikes and still have, a zx9r and Drz400 and I haven't had any worries about safety or reliability,

Err, Ninja man. How many miles and what weather have you ridden any of your bikes in?

What was that? Oh, not many miles at all then. :jes

Psychologically, people don't tend to write reams of text if their chosen property is performing correctly, so naturally any negative posts stand out and see to be the norm. Of the several thousand members on this forum, only a few (in terms of %) have made complaints about their vehicle performing. I have seen numerous posts regarding mileage and many are very high for motorcycles. Perhaps the mass of praise on the Triumph site, is nothing more than genuine surprise that they are still running...:P

Childish sh!t-stirring aside, MOST BMW riders do tend to be all year riders in my experience, and that is not the case for the majority of todays biking fraternity. In honesty, which side of that fence do MOST Triumph riders fall on? I have known many 955 owners who keep it locked up till spring for a few Sundays out, and conditions as well as mileage dictate how a bike may fair.

Superbike magazine, March 2006, test of the new Triumph 675 triple.
'The only negative thing I spotted on the launch was the quality of finish on the engine casings. These test bikes had done around 700 miles or so running them in for the launch........I know that any metal is going to suffer in the salt but for essentially box-fresh bikes to have suffered so badly in those few miles smacks of a little cheapness'
I'm eagerly awaiting the chance to read April's copy and Howard's letter denouncing the journos for lying!

[That alloy looks alright to me]
How can you reason with someone who can't, (won't), see the evidence.

And what about the paint that has peeled off the painted bracket then Howard?

And perhaps you'd like to look at the alloy on this photo? :)

Bike Sales 2005

1. BMW R1200GS 1,980
2. Triumph Tiger 563

As far as Adventure bikes go the GS outsells the Tiger by more than 3 and half times - a far higher ratio than any other bike category.

At the end of the day this says it all!

So, in spite of the Tiger being so much cheaper, large numbers of riders are still not tempted?
Mind you, a 3 years-old used version would make an ideal, throw-away winter hack! Cheaper than bus fares!
