Had the dreaded brake failure light stay on the other day on my 2008 gs mu :( no gs911 so started a process of elimination ,I'd had the front wheel out a week before the warning came up and this was the first time i'd used the bike for 3 weeks so started to check every thing was back in ok, not a lot you can do wrong really though , what i did find was the gap from the front abs sensor tothe ring was 1.2 mm!! limit is 0.2 - 0.7 mm, buggered around with front wheel instalation and found no way to change the gap
Next i checked rear sensor ,all ok no filings at all and speedo was working anyway so was a long shot really , also checked the rear light connections even tho its led ,but again no corrosion , i'd already charged the battery even though it's a fairly new 16 AH motobatt, i'd read that low battery voltage can cause issues .
I was starting to get a bit desperate now so disconnected battery to no avail :( inbetween all these checks kept riding the bike helmetless up and down the cul- de - sac praying the warning light would dissappear, after that i decided to unplug the front abs sensor up near the tank as i was leaning towards a duff sensor (hopefully not the abs unit !!) no corrosion there either .
THEN EUREKA!!! found a few threads mentioning stuck abs pump brushes !! the bike had stood for 3 weeks SO out came a long tyre leave and a hammer, few sharp taps either side ,back on with the ignition , AND brake failure light now flashing !!! it wasn't doing that before !! quick blast up the cul- de -sac again and it's only bloody worked !!!!!! neighbours thought i was mental doing fist pumps in the road :))) so thanks a million to whoever came up with that idea i was starting to sweat pound signs what with the bike insurance due in 2 weeks as well . so if in doubt give it a clout:)

My light is coming on (and staying on until ignition is cycled) sporadically, normally when at a constant high(ish) speed.

I don't want to burst your bubble, but it maybe short lived. The dust that has been unsettled hasn't gone, but has just shifted, so it might bind up once again. Time will tell.:comfort

Lets hope it doesn't fail when you need them!!!!

Removal is the only fail safe fix.

A shot in the dark.
I had a similar problem with the ABS light coming on after I had the front wheel out. I hadn't reseated the sensor properly due to a bit of corrosion in the hole that it fits into. :blast
Took it out again, gave it a clean and it's been fine since.
Those close clearances are there for a reason.

Mine has the ABS warning coming up at random. However the speedo became intermittent around the same time so almost certainly I need a new speedo sensor.

Sticking ABS Brushes ?

After the hammer fix & the ABS is working,I use the ABS at the start of every ride.
This seems to extend the time before the light re appears.
I just use the back brake firmly until the ABS kicks in.
I'm guessing by using the ABS it's unsticking the brushes.
Or on a 2007.
Mine responds to the hammer treatment, but the flashing light returns after a couple of weeks.
So the hammer comes out again.
It's tiresome.

so thanks a million to whoever came up with that idea

You're welcome :D

May need doing a few times with varying intervals inbetween. But it costs nothing and takes a minute rather than spend £1200 on a new part.

The motor can be removed cleaned and replaced. Lots of videos on YouTube.
My Renault Espace had an ABS modulator that looked identical to the 1200 device.
A service exchange unit will cost a fraction of BMWs factory new items.
