Get The Sandwiches Ready GSA Rear Wheel Collapse - Part 3!

Spoke today with someone who used to have a business building motorcycle wheels and he could (before he packed it in) build the BMW cross spoke wheels (which he describes as an utter sh*t of a job and extremely complicated)

He did explain how it is done and how complex it is compared with normal wheels, however, the main point was that even with only 2 or 3 loose spokes they can quickly get out of true and randomly tightening spokes will only pull it out of true even more .

If the wheel is running with missing spoke grub screws or has half a dozen plus loose spokes it needs to be professionally rebuilt or replaced as there is a high likelyhood of failure

So we get back to the beginning, that it was nothing to do with the brake caliper or bolts, simply the wheel collapsed and took the brake caliper with it, when is BMW going to admit, they have screwed up somewhere.

I have just come back from a 10 day 2000 mile ride, two-up and fully loaded on my 2018 Rallye TE, my wheel did not collapse and spokes are not loose - why?

How do you get to that conclusion?

A catastrophic wheel failure with no warning, that rips the caliper off. I would suspect that the stability would deteriorate noticeably well before a wheel would collapse?

I'm not doubting there is an issue with spokes coming loose and that BMW do have an issue to correct.

Not a conclusion just a read through and summary of what has been said in the thread, are we any wiser, I think we are otherwise BMW would not have started changing wheels with loose spokes, as for my last post I am not any wiser as to why the bolts are missing from the parts list.:beerjug:

My recent experience....
GSA TB booked in for a 600 mile service last Saturday and later that day I receive a call to say that the chap working on my bike is not happy with a few of the front spokes and they'd like to keep it until Tuesday (after the BH) in order to contact BMW and discuss with them.... fine by me.
I then ring on Tuesday and I'm informed that the Master Technician has checked over the spokes and is happy with them! I can't argue with this and that a second opinion was sought but I will be keeping tabs on the spokes more frequently now.

better safe than sorry, at least they seem to be checking now.

Was washing mine today for the first time - 980 miles 8 weeks old - about a third of my rear spokes are loose and can be moved by hand - looks like a phone call to the Dealer tomorrow!

2018 Rallye!!

Because you checked everything was ok before, and I bet several times during the tour. :D

The day before we left and the day I got back - so I didn’t think about it when away.

porkie pies methinks............:hippy

Nope - everyone got over excited by the fork business, I just carried on riding, done the same with this spoke nonsense - so many snowflakes worrying about every little thing - FFS are your bikers or schoolgirls?

I am not a worrier and can cope with most things life chucks at me - lose spokes and collapsing wheels whilst giving it the beans is not on my todo list...
